Netflix's The Witcher has been met with its fair share of both praise and criticism. For all the times Henry Cavill simply nails Geralt's signature rough-but-lovable demeanor, are an equal number of moments that have left some viewers confused due to the series switching between multiple timelines. That said, The Witcher pulled off at least one thing absolutely and unarguably perfectly—bard Jaskier's Fantasy Billboard chart-topping hit single "Toss A Coin To Your Witcher." Now, in an interview with Gamesradar+, show composers Giona Ostinelli and Sonya Belousova have revealed that an alternate version of the song exists with its lyrics rapped instead of sung.
"Toss A Coin To Your Witcher" was completed all the way back in November 2018. Since then, Ostinelli jokes, the two have had the song stuck in their head continuously (an experience familiar to Witcher viewers all over the world).
Most of the music featured in The Witcher was written before shooting even began. Ostinelli and Belousova composed multiple versions of some songs so that showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich would have options from which to choose in to best capture the desired sound and mood for the series. In order to employ a wide range of sounds, some instruments were imported from Hungary, Malasia, China and other countries - in a few cases, others were built just for the show.
For each of Jaskier's songs specifically, the duo wrote five or six versions, Belousova recounts. In her view, Jaskier is the Freddie Mercury of The Witcher-verse. To make sure that this rock star quality was embodied by his character's compositions, each one was written in a range of styles from traditional-medieval to more contemporary. This includes the aforementioned rap version of "Toss A Coin To Your Witcher," which Belousova says might be released as a bonus track some day.
To be fair, this may be a joke, or one of those particular kinds of half-jokes that is only a joke as long as it's not taken seriously. In either case, the question then becomes: should Jaskier's Witcher rap be released unto the world? Giona Ostinelli and Sonya Belousova have something very powerful in their hands, and the responsibility of how to use it is theirs and theirs alone.
