FromSoftware's most recent entry, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, is an incredibly challenging but rewarding game with a deep lore, and it was a big hit with fans of the Dark Souls series and newcomers alike.

There were so many memorable moments in Sekiro, from the challenging boss fights to the locations in its world, but also the story itself and some of the dialogue that came with it. The characters of Sekiro are often quite philosophical and as a result, some of the quotes have stuck with us, even almost a year after launching.

10 "My Name... Is Gyoubu Masataka Oniwa! As I Breathe, You Will Not Pass The Castle Gate!"

Gyoubu Oniwa, aka Gyoubu the Demon, is the first real boss players have to face in Sekiro, and he quickly lets them know that he's not going to go down easy. He shouts this line as he makes his entrance on horseback, and it's one of the coolest boss entrances we've seen.

But, Gyoubu is a lot of players' first major hurdle in the game, so we've heard shout this line so many times after dying over and over to him, and we won't soon forget it.

9 "Wolf... Thank... You..."

These are the Demon of Hatred's last words when you finally kill it, and they're just heartbreaking when you know the lore surrounding this quote

The Demon of Hatred is actually the Sculptor, having been consumed by his inner wrath and bloodlust after losing his struggle to contain it. There's just so much tragedy in the Sculptor thanking you for releasing him from his pain that we never forgot it.

8 "A Code Must Be Determined By The Individual... This Is What I've Decided."

Sekiro says this line to his adoptive father, the Great Shinobi Owl, right before Owl tries to kill Sekiro to get to Kuro. It's a quick line that often gets overshadowed by Owl's betrayal, but it's one that stuck with us.

Sekiro spent his whole life having the Iron Code that all shinobi must follow drilled into his mind by Owl, so to see Sekiro go against the code to forge his own path to protect Kuro shows a lot of growth for his character.

7 "How Many Times Have You Died And Come Back To Life For My Sake...?"

Kuro says this line to Sekiro after the second boss fight with Genichiro, and it's memorable because it works on a couple of levels. For one, it can be read as a funny little jab at players struggling with the game's difficulty and dying repeatedly.

But the line is really about the consequences of Sekiro's immortality, how his undying causes the people around to fall ill, which leads to the goal of the second half of the game.

6 "There Is No Shame In Losing One Battle. But You Must Take Revenge By Any Means Necessary!"

Sekiro - Great Shinobi Owl

This line from Owl is a bit tricky to get but it sure is memorable. During the boss battle against Great Shinobi Owl, every time Sekiro dies, Owl recites tenets from the Iron Code. To get him to say this line, Sekiro has to resurrect three times during the fight.

This line from Owl is at the heart of what the gameplay is all about. It's okay to die to enemies, just come right back, learn their moves, and defeat them.

5 "Roberrrrrrt!!"

Sekiro Great Shinobi Armored Warrior

Everyone remembers when the Armored Warrior shouted this line as he plummeted to his death. The line became something of a meme, but a deep dive into the lore reveals that it's much more tragic than it first appears.

It's implied that the Armored Warrior is a foreigner who came to Japan with his son Robert, who was gravely ill, in search of the Rejuvenating Waters to cure him, but the Armored Warrior, unfortunately, dies thinking that he'd failed his son.

4 "Death Of A Shadow... You Taught Me Well."

Sekiro says this line when he kills Owl atop the Ashina Castle tower, and it's a perfect mix of tragic and gratifying. We've already mentioned that Owl was Sekiro's adoptive father, so it was he that taught Sekiro how to be a shinobi. Owl even sounds proud that Sekiro was able to kill him.

Great Shinobi Owl is not an easy fight by any means. Most people spend hours, even days, trying to beat this boss, and to hear this line after all that work is immensely rewarding.

3 "My Lord, I Have Come For You. This... Will Only Take A Moment."

Sekiro doesn't say much throughout the game, but when he does, he's usually saying something immensely cool. For example, take this line that Sekiro says when he faces Genichiro the second time.

Kuro had just refused Genichiro's offer of fealty when Sekiro arrives and delivers this amazing one-liner as he draws his sword. It does a great job of hyping you up before the battle and motivating you to see it through.

2 "If It Is For The Sake Of Preserving Ashina, I Will Seize Any Matter Of Heretical Strength."

Genichiro in Sekiro with his shirt removed and lighting striking his sword

Just when we thought we defeated Genichiro, he sheds his armor, delivers this line, then proceeds to one-shot us with a lightning attack. Few things are as frustrating as Genichiro's Way of Tomoe, but this line will stick with us because it gives such great insight Genichiro as a character.

Everything he has ever done has been for the sake of his country, and he would do whatever it takes to see Ashina remain in power, even if it means letting go of his humanity to learn a forbidden practice.

1 "Hesitation Is Defeat."

Isshin Ashina draws his sword

Finally, we have this simple line from the final boss of the game, Isshin, the Sword Saint. It's short and sweet, but it's also unforgettable, mainly because we had to hear it over and over while he kept killing us.

You only hear this line when he kills you, but it's actually good advice and perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the game. Sekiro is all about staying on the offensive, but when we're up against a tough enemy, we tend to back off a bit, and that ends up being the reason we die. Isshin is literally telling players how to defeat him.
