Final Fantasy is the one of the most popular JRPGs of all time, and Final Fantasy VII is considered by many to be the best game out of the core fifteen. It was the first Final Fantasy available for PlayStation and is credited with bringing the appeal of JRPGS outside of Japan to North America. One of the most noteworthy things about Final Fantasy VII is that it introduced us to two of the most well-known characters in the franchise - Cloud Strife and Sephiroth.

In Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife attempts to join SOLDIER, Shinra Corporation’s elite fighting unit in the capital city of Midgar. He fails out of the program and becomes an unrespected Shinra infantryman, shattering his dreams to become as strong as Sephiroth, one of SOLDIER's most renowned members.

Since the game’s original release in 1997, there have been many debates on which character is stronger. However with romance being such an integral part of the series, it stands to question, who would be the better husband - Cloud or Sephiroth?

On the surface, Cloud seems like the clear, better choice. He is the strong, silent type. He is a focused fighter who cares about his friends and will go to the ends of the world to protect them. However, Cloud may have a bit of an inferiority complex and at times, lets his ego get in the way. Remember when he hid his identity from Tifa and his other friends when he came back to Nibelheim, because he felt as though he had failed?

This is by no means to say that Sephiroth is a great person. Anyone who has ever played Final Fantasy knows that Sephiroth is a terrible, terrible individual. I mean, he did burn Nibelheim to the ground, killing its residents (including Tifa’s father), attempted to kill Tifa, tried to get Cloud to kill Aerith only to then kill her himself, killed Cloud’s mother, haunted and tormented Cloud - the list goes on. But, Sephiroth was not always evil and his descent into madness was caused by outside influences, namely finding out he’s not really a human. Even though this may sound strange, I believe that Sephiroth would be a better husband than Cloud.

On a vain level, both characters are conventionally attractive. However, Sephiroth is beating Cloud in the height and muscles department. And let's be honest, Sephiroth would be the better one when it comes to sharing haircare products and a skincare regimen with.

Additionally, I don’t think Cloud is great at being emotionally honest. Although Cloud does not end up betrothed at the end of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, he has been in a clear emotional “entanglement” with his childhood best friend, Tifa Lockheart, and the magical Aerith Gainsborough.

Moreover, Sephiroth is pretty passionate. When he tells Cloud, "...lend me your strength. Let us defy destiny together," I fell in love. That’s almost Shakespearean. Now, imagine that as a wedding vow. Whereas Cloud has a tendency to become delusional and forget things, Sephiroth is known for holding onto memories. He will be the more likely one to remember your birthday, anniversaries and your favorite sword.

Sephiroth

Apparently, I am not the only one who thinks this. According to a poll conducted on Twitter, 62 percent of people thought that Sephiroth would indeed be the better spouse. “Fate is not to be taken lightly” and neither is love, and my heart is ready to see nothing but shadows.
