Seth Rogen might well be getting a Donkey Kong movie of his very own after he voices the character for the Mario movie in 2022.

Hollywood once tried to transform the Mario games into something fitting of the big screen. If you have seen 1993's Super Mario Bros, you'll know that didn't really work out. Movies such as Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog, both of which are coming to Netflix this month, have flipped the script on video game movies. So much so that Hollywood is back to give Mario a second chance.

The Mario movie, which hits theaters in December 2022, will be different from the one that came before. It's animated, for starters. Nintendo revealed the all-star cast of the movie earlier this year, receiving a mixed response to the news that Chris Pratt will be Mario. The inclusion of Donkey Kong, who will be voiced by Seth Rogen, was also a little surprising.

Donkey Kong's role in the Mario movie remains unclear. However, it seems Rogen's deal as Donkey Kong extends beyond just the Mario movie. According to Giant Freakin Robot, DK will be getting his very own movie at some point after Mario hits the big screen. The site reports it has inside sources close to the project that have confirmed a Donkey Kong movie is in the works.

The potential plot of the movie is unknown at this point, of course. While not confirmed, it's assumed Fred Armisen, who will voice Cranky Kong in the Mario movie, will reprise his role for a DK movie after that. It also seems likely that a number of other characters from the DK universe will be making their cinematic debuts. We vote for Diddy Kong and Funky Kong if Illumination and Nintendo are taking requests.

A standalone Donkey Kong movie might seem a little ambitious. The character isn't as instantly recognizable to the layman as Mario, Sonic, or Pikachu. DK is getting his very own park in Super Nintendo World though. It is currently slated to open in 2024. Releasing a DK movie in 2023 could be the perfect way to generate momentum for the monkey ahead of Donkey Kong land's grand opening.
