Shadows Over Loathing is a vast game full of stick figures and weird humor. Taking place in the 1920s era, you're on an adventure to gather cursed items and uncurse them. As you look for each item in the different chapters, you'll encounter a lot of side quests to keep you occupied.

They range from being comically short to surprisingly long. Still, each one is an opportunity to get some much-needed XP and some valuable items. Though there are many, these side quests shine brighter than the rest, if only for being the most memorable and decently rewarding.

8 The Hobo Camp

Shadows Over Loathing Hobo Camp

In the starting area of Ocean City, there will be several locations you'll frequently visit throughout your adventure. A notable one is the Hobo Camp which lies north of Main Street. When you arrive, you'll see the camp is composed of several abandoned but designated boxcars. There's also a Hobo King with few subjects in his camp.

This begins your job to tell any hobos you encounter about the Hobo Camp so they have a place to call home. This will populate the area, allow you to learn Hobo Code to uncover profitable secrets, unlock additional services, and earn the Hobo King's trust.

7 The Monster Hunt

Moist is a word that makes people uncomfortable, so it's unfortunate (and intentional) that this game has a swamp area called the Big Moist. Even though Gatormen may be the most prominent threat in the area, they're not the only monsters you'll encounter. On the northeast area of the map is the Monster Shack, where a group of imaginative and creative kids has formed a monster-hunting club.

Each one will ask for your help hunting a different kind of monster. It's an adventurous task that requires a mix of combat, thinking, and good stats to achieve, but it's worth it to net you one of the most useful accessories in the game.

6 The Frog God's Curse

Shadows Over Loathing Frog Bog

As you continue around the Big Moist, you'll find a lot of fantastical things. Wander far enough south, and you'll enter a Frog Bog with a huge group of frogs that can speak English somewhat. They'll tell you that they've been cursed and give you a gem to take to a place called Haim Quarry. When you arrive, you'll find a large Frog Statue in a cave with a missing gem eye.

However, a frog in a human body will argue that humans deserve the curse for disturbing the environment. You're then tasked to actually gather as much information as possible to make what you feel is the most ethical and just decision, something uncommon for a game like this.

5 Rufus Research

Shadows Over Loathing Rufus Lab

Games are a great way to unwind after a long day of classes, but this game makes you go to classes for a chapter. Enrolling in S.I.T. lets you explore a college campus and take in the collegiate scene. Should you make your way into the sewers, you'll find a secret lab run by an ambitious researcher named Rufus.

Talking to him will send you to complete a number of tasks across different areas through various actions. Each time you complete one, Rufus will have a new reward for you and a new challenge. It's one of the longer side quests, and it's fun to see it through.

4 Stock The Crystal Shop

Shadows Over Loathing Crystal Shop

Like other RPGs, this game throws a fair number of puzzles at you, and this is one of the more notable. While visiting Crystaldream Lake, you can find a gift shop selling crystals in the south. Unfortunately, you'll learn that there are no crystals for sale. Talking to the shopkeeper reveals that the nearby crystal mine has shut down, so no new crystals are coming in.

Going to investigate will have you become embroiled in a puzzle involving item collecting and time travel. You'll also need to obtain certain items for other areas just to put the shop back in business. Once you do, you'll get a nice keepsake and unlock a unique accessory shop.

3 Support The Speakeasy

Shadows Over Loathing Speakeasy

In the 1920s, prohibition was all the rage, and many people weren't happy about it. Your character seems to be on the side of alcohol for all since the story eventually gives them ownership over a speakeasy. This business runs in the background while you're questing, but it's pretty limited in terms of service.

Luckily, you can find other liquors, snacks, and supplies to take back to the speakeasy. This will make it more profitable and expand your drink menu, which can offer additional passive buffs. It's also a cool place to hang out with catchy music and lively animations.

2 The Brewster Murder Case

Shadows Over Loathing Brewster's House

Ocean City easily has the most regular buildings in the whole game, but each has something going on. Roaming around the southern part of the map will lead you to Ms. Brewster's House. It's a boarding house exclusively populated by traveling salesmen, some of whom you'll have met while traveling.

But all is not well, as one of Ms. Brewster's tenants has been murdered. You have to investigate the scene to develop a theory and then interview all the tenants to find the suspect. It's a relatively short mission, but it's entertaining nonetheless.

1 The Corn Maze

Shadows Over Loathing Corn Maze

Where would a 1920s game be without a farm? Well, they're not mandatory, but farms help sell the old Americana vibe. This comes through in the area of Gray County, complete with a corn maze. Exploring around the Feed House will lead you to a strange house that seems to be phasing out of existence, but surprisingly, the corn maze behind it is more interesting.

Pushing your way through it will have you explore a series of areas full of junk, lost people of varying professions, cursed corn, and a giant crow. While you're here, your job is to make the denizens of the corn as happy as possible through navigation, collecting, and exchanging. It's curious, weird, and amusing to see it through.
