Money is important in video games. In simulation games, you use it to construct buildings, in action games you use it to buy guns, and in Shin Megami Tensei 5 you use it to... summon demons from an unholy compendium.

And that's not all. Macca (this game's currency) is used for purchasing items and the essences of various demons, in addition to being used to pay some demons to join your party or to leave you alone. With so many uses for Macca, you'll want to accrue a large stash of it - let's look at your options.

There are a few methods that you can use to get a bit of extra cash in your pocket.

  • Beating up demons on the overworld is a reliable way to get some Macca. Just like the majority of RPGs, grinding is always an option and can be used alongside the other methods mentioned here.
  • Keep a lookout for vending machines dotting the world. They contain relics that can be sold en masse to Gustave at the Cadaver's Hollow. These are here specifically for the purpose of selling, so don't hoard them.
  • Make sure you beat up Mitama whenever you see them, whether they're on their own on the overworld or tagging along to other demons' fights. They'll drop a lot of Macca in addition to experience.
  • Keep an eye out for Saki Mitama in particular. These are the golden Mitama and they drop valuable relics in addition to their large Macca haul.
  • If you have the Mitama Dance DLC, you can increase the appearance rate of Saki Mitama in the options menu.

  • When you are accompanied by a Quest Navigator such as Amanozako, you can listen to their advice whenever you reach a point of interest. Sometimes, they will provide you with items or a bunch of Macca all at once!
  • Beware, though, as these areas can also end up being ambushes - so make sure you're ready for a fight.
