Meltan is returning to Pokémon GO!
Well, technically they never left if you also linked your Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! or Let’s Go Eevee! to your Pokémon GO account. If you did, you were able to spawn a new Meltan every seven days when the cool-off period of your Mystery Box finally expired.
But that’s a pretty long time to get a single Meltan, and the odds of a shiny spawning via this method were slim to none. On top of that, getting Meltan to evolve into a Melmetal requires 400 candies, so unless you’d stocked up on Rare Candies, there was no way to make a Melmetal happen without slowly harvesting the Mystery Box for very long time.
Well, that’s finally going to change. Pokémon GO just announced that not only will shiny Meltan return starting in a new event next week, we’ll also be able to open the Mystery Box once every 3 days instead of once every 7.
Shiny Meltan returns starting on Wednesday, April 24th at 1:00 PM. The event runs until Sunday, May 5th at 1:00 PM and during the event there will be an increased chance to spawn a shiny Meltan every time you open the Mystery Box!
Starting April 24 at 1:00 p.m. PDT, you’ll have a chance to encounter Shiny Meltan when you use the Mystery Box! From April 24 on, you’ll be able to open the Mystery Box every three days! Keep in mind that opening the Mystery Box is the only way to obtain a Meltan. The little brass nut doesn’t spawn like a regular Pokémon, and you have to transfer a Pokémon from Pokémon GO to Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu! or Let’s Go Eevee! in order to obtain the Mystery Box. Then you can start opening them during the event for an increased chance to obtain a shiny Meltan.
Not only that, but the Mystery Box will be forever changed on April 24th to open every 3 days instead of 7. Melmetal is finally within your grasp!
Sadly, Melmetal (and the pre-evolution Meltan) aren’t particularly viable for raiding in Pokémon GO. Melmetal is reasonably tough, but his lack of on-type moves really hampers his viability as either an attacker or defender. Meltan and Melmetal are mostly for prestige, but hey, prestige is more than enough reason to want that shiny Melmetal.
