The developers behind Shovel Knight have confirmed the franchise isn't ending any time soon. Since its launch in 2014, Shovel Knight has remained one of the most popular independently-made games. Last year saw the release of the final two expansions of Treasure Trove: King of Cards and Shovel Knight Showdown.

Shovel Knight is one of the greatest Kickstarter success stories around. The game was quickly funded, exceeding goals. Yacht Club Games, the developer behind the title, has cemented itself as very well-liked among players. The core game is a tribute to the 8-bit titles of old, while still feeling like a fresh experience. On top of that, the expansions have been received well by fans.

Shovel Knight is one of the indie games that has widespread appeal. The character has his own Amiibo, has appeared in crossovers, and is even an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Although the core Shovel Knight game has concluded with King of Cards, the developers have assured fans the franchise will be continuing.

It appears Yacht Club has long-term plans for the franchise. The presumed next game in the series is Shovel Knight Dig. Sadly, Yacht Club did not confirm a release for this year. Although it's not well-known yet, Yacht is also working on a Shovel Knight board game. Shovel Knight fans have a lot to look forward to.

At the moment, one can only speculate what the future holds for Shovel Knight. Will Yacht Club Games continue to focus on 2D adventures, or go for something completely different? Fans would be lining up to play a Shovel Knight 3D platformer in the vein of Super Mario 64 or Pac-Man World. Shovel Knight has resonated with many gamers, a great accomplishment. It will be exciting to see where Yacht takes the franchise coming up.
