Every Sims Game, Ranked
There have been many Sims games, including some peculiar spin-offs. Which are the best?

However, The Sims 3 is not without its faults. The graphics are admittedly a bit dated in places, and lag and stutter are abundant. This is where mods come in: While some mods add entirely new gameplay elements, others build on existing features, making them more full, fun, and, well, better. From default replacements to new gameplay and interactions, here are essential mods to try for The Sims 3.

Updated January 1, 2024 by Rowan Cardosa: The Sims 3 still has a thriving mod community, so we've gone back and added a few more mods we couldn't live without. In addition to scouring the Internet for the best mods, we've also credited each entry with the creator's name. Finally, a few broken links have been fixed to make sure each mod is easy to access.

How To Download Mods In The Sims 3

A screenshot of the path to the Sims 3 folder: Libraries > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3

Before you actually install any mods, some prep work needs to be done. First, you’ll need something called the FrameworkSetup.zip file. Download this file and extract it into your Document > Electronic Arts > Sims 3 folder on your PC (this path should be the same for Origin and Steam downloads). In your Sims 3 folder, there will now be a new “Mods” folder, with “Overrides” and “Packages” folders inside. These folders are where your mods will go.

Now, you’re ready to download mods — just make sure you read the descriptions of the mods you download to ensure that you put them in the right place.

19 Ultimate Careers

Zerbu's Ultimate Careers mod makes the rabbit hole careers of The Sims 3 more similar to active careers from The Sims 4 or The Sims 3: Ambitions. When you assign a career or school to an applicable community lot, your Sims will now interact with objects on that lot while you control them. Certain objects will increase or decrease your work performance depending on your role’s requirements, but other measures — like mood and relationships — still apply.

Custom careers are also supported, and the mod can be configured to tweak all of its settings to your liking. Work-related lifetime aspiration rewards are supported, but unfortunately, work-related opportunities are not.

18 Like For Like Build And Buy Mode

The Sims 3 has a lot of objects, and while there are plenty of ways to search for items, it’s inevitable that something will get lost in the shuffle. TizerisT's Like For Build and Buy Mode overrides the 'by function' sorting filter Build and Buy Mode, grouping similar items; all other categorization systems remain intact.

The mod doesn’t take price into account when grouping objects; instead, it groups similar types of items (TizerisT uses beds as an example — Single Beds > Bunk Beds > Double Beds > Double Beds with Roof > Special Beds — to demonstrate the categorization). It also unlocks almost all the game’s debug items, all properly categorized and sorted. There’s also a historical version, which ignores electrical objects, making it perfect for medieval worlds.

17 Retuned Attraction System

Fentonparkninja has re-tuned The Sims 3’s attraction system to make it more detailed and well-rounded. Essentially, the system is now more selective, and you can tailor what factors you want to contribute to the attraction system by choosing from a handful of mod 'flavors.'

There are flavors that cover Zodiac, reward, trait, and mood attraction, plus variety and purity flavors; variety combines all the aforementioned factors when considering attraction, and purity encourages Sims to be faithful to their partners, even if your active Sim doesn’t know about them. Purity and Variety also come with easy variants, which makes attraction thresholds a bit lower.

16 NRAAS Overwatch

Any NRAAS mod is arguably a must-have for Sims 3 players, but Overwatch is a great place to start. Overwatch lets you change so, so many settings in the game, but the best feature is the daily cleanup. These cleanups can reduce lag and stuttering and take care of broken game elements that could otherwise lead to corruption over time.

There are so, so many settings that you can customize, but some notable additions include stopping autonomous pet adoption, enabling testingcheats automatically, turning off stereos and TVs, and disabling full moon lighting — note, though, that this only disables the lighting effects, not zombies; you’ll need Retuner for that.

In many ways, Sims 4 is all about aesthetics and customization, and here are the best purely cosmetic mods that actually make a difference.

If you’ve already played in one save for a long time, you can also perform a total reset on your town. This is essentially the same thing as resetting a Sim. If your game freezes for a second, don’t panic — that’s just the mod working! It will take a minute or two to refresh everything, but then your save will be nice and clean.

15 NRAAS Story Progression

Two Sims play chess in a Sunset Valley park, while one Sim (left) gains logic skill. In the top-right corner, a notification pops up where the other Sim (right) talks about the "new car smell" they experienced on their drive there.

NRAAS’ Story Progression replaces the vanilla Story Progression system and adds an array of new story progression settings. It takes Sims’ traits into account to determine what they theoretically would or wouldn’t want or do. But importantly, it also breaks Story Progression down into categories, so that you have much more control over how it works. Unlike in the vanilla system, where story progression can only be turned on or off completely.

In this mod, there are Lot, Household, Sim, and even Caste-level settings (castes are groups of Sims that players can create and define, so that specific settings can be assigned to specific groups). You can also turn story progression on or off for specific Sims, Households, or lots. The mod also comes with a number of optional modules, making it totally customizable.

14 Zoom-In CaS Camera

A split image of The Sims 3's CAS: on the left, a Sim's face with the Hairs menu pulled up. On the right, a Sim's hand with Create-A-Style selected, highlighting their watch.

Between sliders for individual body parts and the Create-a-Style color wheel, The Sims 3 has some amazing customization options. Unfortunately, though, you can hardly zoom in on your Sim’s face to utilize them.

Shimrod101's Zoom-In CaS Camera does exactly what it sounds like: it allows you to zoom in much closer on your Sim’s face, so you can really see the changes you’re making. This mod is also great for getting a closer look at accessories, like belts or jewelry. Plus, it's much easier to drag patterns or colors from one clothing item to another, now that you can zoom in on them properly.

13 No (Or Fewer) Automatic Memories

On the left, two Sims get married, and gain a memory for the event. On the right, a Sim visits the park, and with velocitygrass's mod, doesn't get a memory!

Memories in The Sims 3 are a charming addition to the Generations Expansion Pack, and their appearance in a lifelong scrapbook is a nice touch. But, most players agree that going to the park is not necessarily worth memorializing in a scrapbook, next to your wedding photos. Velocitygrass' No (Or Fewer) Automatic Memories has made it so your Sims can have either no automatic memories at all or fewer automatic memories focused on milestone life events.

There’s also a downloadable custom tool that lets you control exactly which memories you want your Sims to gain automatically. You can only have one version of this mod in your game at a time, but it’s easy to switch out the files whenever you want a change.

12 CAS Overhaul

The Sims 3 is cursed with shiny clothing textures across the board (even jeans look like they’ve been coated in plastic). But carversims has saved Sim fashion by making default replacements of every item of clothing in the game — yes, every single pack — plus a bunch of clothing sets from The Sims 3 Store.

11 Blue Skies & Sunshine Lighting Mod

The worlds and environment in The Sims 3 already look stunning, but sometimes the lighting in Live Mode is less than flattering. Blue Skies & Sunshine is one of many brntwaffles lighting mods that make the game brighter, clearer, and with fewer weird shadows.

Indoor and outdoor spaces both look better, but the Sims benefit the most, since each Sim’s unique features shine in better lighting. There are also a handful of different water options, so you can decide what kind of world you want your Sims to inhabit.

10 Moar Interactions

Buzzler's Moar Interactions adds new interactions to The Sims 3 and fixes some existing ones to make them more detailed or complex. Most of these new interactions are social, but community lots also have added functionality, too. Sims can now try to buy ingredients from restaurants, attend shows and games in groups, and work overtime or part-time single shifts at any lot that offers jobs.

Many of these actions are autonomous, which is great for gameplay — but, be careful when uninstalling this mod. Buzzler notes that you must make sure no Sim was performing these interactions when you save the game.

9 Cancel Time Off

Time off from work in the real world can be a blessing. While time off in The Sims 3 can be nice, it can also prevent you from achieving some of your goals and making Simoleons. This simple mod will solve all of your problems! Now, you can easily cancel time off right from your phone. Additionally, you can adjust how many days you want to cancel.

This will come in handy if you have a Sim that recently gave birth. While quality time with a baby can be nice, it may start to drag on, especially if your Sim is already close to aging up again.

8 Just Sit

Sims never seem to sit in the same spot for too long. Meals may be eaten standing up, and conversations will be had standing right next to a table. Rather than living a standing life, you can download FloTheory's Just Sit mod. With this mod, your Sims will now sit for up to two hours without deciding to randomly get up.

With the power to make Sims sit comes great responsibility. If you command a Sim to sit on a couch and then leave them be, they will stay there regardless of how they are feeling. Be sure to monitor your sitting Sims. You don't want them to starve to death on the couch.

7 Clean UI

The UI of The Sims 3 is charming, but it may not suit every style. With Justmiha's Clean UI mod, you can play the game with a minimalist UI. This mod isn't game changing, but it may make the actual appearance of the game a bit easier on the eyes.

This is a great mod to download if you play a cottagecore-esque game. Rather than having a harsh blue UI take you out of the game, it can now match the cottage of your dreams.

6 Add Any Lot Size

In general, The Sims 3 is pretty generous with lot sizes, especially when compared to The Sims 4, where lots are predetermined and can't be resized. Although this lot customization may be great, some locations require specific lot sizes that you may not find in the lot tab of the Sims 3.

With this mod, you can customize the size of any lot. This allows you to make lots specific to your world. Now, you can make a unique town filled with differently-shaped buildings!

5 NRAAS ErrorTrap

Even if you don't plan on using other mods in your game, ErrorTrap is indispensable for keeping your saves functional. Like Overwatch, ErrorTrap doesn't make any changes to your gameplay. Instead, it focuses on small background changes you might not have even thought of correcting with mods.

As much as we love The Sims, the series is known for being quite buggy. Some of these bugs can crash your game or corrupt your save. That's where ErrorTrap comes in. The mod catches and "traps" errors as they occur, letting you play for as long as you like.

4 NRAAS Retuner

The Sims 3 Pets: 2 Sims Riding on Horses Down Trail

Retuner is definitely a mod that's intended for more advanced users. Most interactions in The Sims 3 have a number of different settings attached to them in the game's coding. It's possible to 'tune' these settings to mod your game by altering their parameters. Maybe you want a certain bed to give you more energy, or a certain interaction to take longer. Creating these mods is normally a tedious process, but with Retuner, you can easily alter these settings without having to close your game.

While there are countless tuning mods available that cover everything from motive decay to pregnancy length, it can get exhausting to keep track of them all. You should definitely give this mod a try if you're willing to put in a little elbow grease. Once you've mastered the basics of tuning in The Sims 3, you can customize just about every function in the game to your desires.

3 NRAAS MasterController

A map of one of The Sims 3 worlds

MasterController is a powerful mod that lets you do just about everything to everyone. You can certainly use this mod to cheat, but it's mostly useful for managing your non-active Sims. Editing the appearances of townies is one of the main things we've used this mod for, but you can also delete corrupted Sims or dramatically alter NPC relationships.

While MasterController works just fine in the base game, it dovetails nicely with other mods in the NRAAS suite. There's an optional module you can download that gives you more control over certain aspects of the Story Progression mod. You can also download several other modules that let you do everything from breaking the game to altering the CAS tattoo system.

2 Name Randomizer

There are several situations in The Sims 3 where you might be asked to enter a name for a Sim. CAS is one, but every adoption, birth, or stuffed animal brings forth more possibilities. Unlike The Sims 4, there isn't an option to randomize names if you're not feeling creative. This can make it difficult for certain playstyles, such as the 100 Baby Challenge.

Enter Eca's Name Randomizer mod. This mod adds a small dice icon to the naming interface, similar to the one that shows up in The Sims 4. You can also randomize first and last names separately, giving you absolute control over how much energy you want to devote to naming your Sims.

1 MoveObjects And CFE Hotkeys

MoveObjects and Constrain Floor Elevation (or CFE) are two cheats that are invaluable to builders. MoveObjects lets you arrange objects outside of the bounds the game normally sets for you, while CFE allows you to get creative with wall heights, floors, and platforms.

This mod from Eca lets you toggle these cheats on and off with the push of a button. Gone are the days of having to type out the entire cheat code by pressing Ctrl + Shift + C. With this mod, MoveObjects is activated with the 'o' key in Build/Buy mode, while CFE is activated with the 'f' key.
