The Sims 4 has so much to do. Between the base game and the additional Stuff Packs, Expansion Packs, and Game Packs that have been released, it's basically impossible to get bored while enjoying a game of The Sims 4. But while the game has a ton of content, you might still like to get a little more out of your experience.

Luckily, the Sims community is full of talented people who create custom hairstyles, clothing, furniture, and even gameplay tweaks. Some of these are just for cosmetic purposes, some add silly fun, and some make your game even more realistic.

Updated March 30, 2023, by Jouanna Bondakji: The Sims 4 is still having different packs made that add depth and realism to your experience, though many players argue that a lot of the things in them should've already been in the base game. With the release of the Growing Together Expansion Pack, there's more depth to Sims' likes and dislikes, as well as new social and situation events.

Most of all, though, it focuses a lot on children and family. This is something players have been wanting for a while now that modders have done a great job at providing. However, the expansion packs still don't encompass everything that mods can do in a game. And for free, at that.

22 Wicked Whims

Easily one of the most obscene mods by a country mile, don't give Wicked Whims by TURBODRIVER a pass just because of its Rated R content. The changes it makes when it comes to fleshing out the sexuality of your Sims are truly one of a kind.

The end result is one of the most realistic Sims 4 mods. From overhauling the attraction system to adding a bunch of risque animations and the like — Wicked Whims is the perfect mod for you if you want their romantic endeavors in the game to venture into the extreme.

21 Emotional Socials

A Sim going through different emotions in The Sims 4

A person's emotions govern their levels of happiness and the actions they perform in real life. This has been brought over to The Sims 4, where a Sim's emotions play a crucial role in making these virtual characters more believable.

With the Emotional Socials mod by helaene, the range of unique actions that a Sim can perform based on their mood is heightened significantly. It's a small but great addition that makes the regular interactions of this game feel more engaging. Many of the actions are even autonomous, so you won't always have to click on them yourself.

20 School Activities

The High School Years Expansion Pack lets you do more things with your child and teen Sims, but it doesn't cover everything. The School Activities mod by KiaraSims adds even more stuff for your Sims to do after school, so you can bring out their personalities and make their storylines go even further.

With this mod, your Sim can attend clubs including but not limited to ballet, basketball, dance, band, and karate. Not only does it add more variety and realism to the game, but it also makes teen and child Sims stand out a little more, which is much needed in a game that usually prioritizes adult and young adult Sims.

19 Life Tragedies

Sudden tragedies are devastating and traumatic for the people involved. Though they're an undeniable part of life, you usually want to avoid them whenever possible. However, if you really want to make your game resemble real life, you can add more tragic deaths with the Life Tragedies mod by SACRIFICIAL.

Dying in The Sims is often kind of goofy, but this mod makes things a little too real with its additions. For example, your Sim can die from disease, be the victim of a hit-and-run, or even get murdered. It's not for everyone, but Life Tragedies definitely adds some interesting and unexpected factors into your game.

18 Risky Woohoo And Try For Baby Chances*

Fertility can be quite tricky and unpredictable in life. Becoming pregnant without meaning or wanting to, or being infertile despite wanting a baby are things people go through every day. This mod by PolarBearSims emulates those experiences. With it, Sims may or may not use protection during Woohoo depending on their traits, and their chances of becoming pregnant change based on that.

Sims have different fertility percentages based on certain factors. For example, Sims of different ages also have different chances of becoming pregnant, just like in real life. Not to fear, though. If your Sim is infertile, but you want them to have a baby, this mod also offers locations where they can increase their fertility.

17 Sim Services

The Sims 4 has several Sims without a home, as well as younger people who don't really have a guardian to look up to. Both these groups — along with a bunch of other people — are taken care of with the Sims Services mod by BosseladyTV.

This mod lets you construct a homeless shelter and a youth group home to help aimless Sims find a place to stay. There are two new careers pertaining to these as well, along with a bunch of other great additions, such as different emotions based on where and how long Sims stay.

16 Child Prodigies Bundle

While it's not the norm, there are always moments when child prodigies come out of nowhere to wow the people around them. These musical maestros show their penchant for this art from an early age.

With the Child Prodigies Bundle mod by JaneSimsten, child and teen Sims can become musical geniuses. They can develop aspirations for becoming musicians, practice music after class, and even participate in music competitions against other Sims their age. The Sims is all about living vicariously through fictional characters, and this mod makes that even more possible with child prodigies.

15 Perfumery

This mod by Simsonian Library adds another small yet useful change to the world of The Sims 4. It allows you to use different flowers to make varying scents that have an effect on a Sim's mood. A couple of them even affect needs, like improving hygiene and lowering stress.

Most of the scents also transfer to other Sims you interact with, allowing you to indirectly change their moods a little as well. It's a small but engaging feature that's fun to interact with. After all, scents can affect how you feel in real life, and some people do make perfumes in their spare time.

14 Basemental Drugs

If you're looking to add a darker spin to the lives of your Sims, one step towards it is the Basemental Drugs mod by Basemental. With this mod, you can integrate drug use and abuse into The Sims 4. Drug use can seriously impact you in real life, and Basemental Drugs replicates that with life-changing situations like addiction and rehabilitation.

It even changes how your Sims walk, as well as their moods and needs. It's a pretty useful mod if you want to make a storyline that involves drugs.

13 Basemental Gangs

Basemental Gangs by Basemental is a mod that might not be up everyone's alley. However, if you do decide to try it out, you may find yourself oddly enthralled by the changes it brings. It's especially great for if you want your Sim to get in with bad crowds.

Featuring gang management, rivalries, and everything else along those lines, Basemental Gangs is easily one of the most interesting Sims 4 mods. The gameplay additions might be a bit too much to handle at times, but you just might find yourself invested if you give this mod a shot.

12 The Sims 4 Go To School Mod Pack

The Get to Work Expansion Pack was an excellent addition for The Sims 4. Having the ability to control Sims at their workplace and take care of any challenges that come along the way makes for an exciting gameplay change that was quite welcome.

So, in a bid to emulate the same gameplay loop for school children, the Go to School Mod Pack by Zerbu was released as well. With this mod, you can send your child Sims to school and control them directly as they face a slew of academic trials and tribulations.

11 Ultrasound Scan

Just like in the real world, pregnancy is a huge part of a Sim's life. Sims are able to have people feel their stomachs, talk about their due date, and can even tell people the big news after they take a pregnancy test. But there are a couple of things missing from the experience of playing through a Sim's pregnancy.

One of them is the fact that Sims aren't able to go to the doctor and get an ultrasound to check up on their baby or print and take home with them. With this mod by LittleMsSam, Sims are able to take a trip to the doctor and can even bring home an ultrasound scan of their little bundle of joy.

10 Height Slider

This mod by GODJUL1 changes the way Create a Sim works. While it's already possible to change just about everything about your Sim's physical appearance (including the size of their feet!), the one thing that you can't change is your Sim's height. Because of this, every Sim is unrealistically the exact same height.

While this is a completely cosmetic mod, it's still a fun and unique one that can change your gameplay up and make your game a lot more realistic. It allows you to make your Sims taller or shorter, making things make way more sense than having everyone be the exact same height.

9 Talkative Trait

Some people just love to talk and tell stories to the people around them. In the base game of The Sims 4, there's really no trait that expresses that. Some, like the "Outgoing" trait, are similar, but just not quite what you might be looking for.

Luckily, the Talkative Trait by simlicioussarah completely changes that. With this trait, Sims will now love to talk and chat about just about anything they can to anyone who will listen. If you've got a Sim that would never shy away from chattering on about their favorite hobbies or interests, this mod is perfect for them.

8 More Best Friends

More Best Friends by LittleMsSam changes the way your Sim's friendships work. In the game as it currently is, your Sim can become best friends with only one other Sim. It can be their spouse, a friend, or a family member.

While that's great, it's not exactly realistic to only have a single best friend. Most people have multiple best friends. So, if you're looking to make your Sims' relationships with other Sims more true to life, this mod helps emulate that in a simple but effective way.

7 True Happiness

The Kealoha household from The Sims 4 Island Living - Makoa is working on Nani's Character Values.

True Happiness by roBurky is a mod that changes the way your Sim's moods work. Usually, Sims are basically always in some kind of positive mood like happy. It's pretty easy to keep your Sims feeling good as the game is right now, which is fine but not all that realistic.

If you're looking for a more realistic way to manage your Sim's moods, check this mod out. It edits the way events impact your Sim's mood, making their happiness not as easy to attain. Now, becoming truly "happy" for your Sims involves having something really special happen to them.

6 Faster Eating And Drinking

This mod by cyclelegs doesn't just make your game a bit more realistic, itt also makes it a lot more fun. Currently, Sims take quite a while to do just about anything. But with this mod, at least one part of their life is sped up dramatically.

If you play The Sims 4, you know how long your Sims can take to eat their meals. They could be sitting at the table for hours eating. That's not only unrealistic, but also a little annoying since you've likely got other things you want them to do as well. Luckily, this mod is here to help speed up that process.

5 Invisible Fence

Invisible Fence by Bakie tweaks how your Sims interact with the world around them. If you've ever spent a ton of time on a house or perfectly landscaped the outside of your Sim's home, you know how frustrating it can be to have them completely ignore the pathways you've created in order to cut through the grass.

This mod makes their behavior with things like sidewalks and pathways more realistic. With it, you can fence off your pathway and force your Sim to walk along it instead of randomly cutting through the grass. The best part is that it's completely invisible, so you won't be able to see it.

4 50 Percent Lower Salaries

This mod by Satira decreases how much your Sims get paid through their jobs. Let's be honest, Sims get paid really well. As they move up through the ranks of their careers, they get all kinds of bonuses, rewards, and raises in their pay.

While that's great if you want to buy your Sims all the coolest gadgets and most comfortable pieces of furniture, it's just not entirely true to life. With this mod, the salaries are cut down to a more realistic place. Thankfully, though, there are other ways of making money besides jobs.

3 Better Romance*

The Better Romance mod by simler90 improves romantic relationship aspects between Sims. Normally, it's pretty easy to get two Sims into a romantic relationship. And even if they don't have a romantic relationship, there are a lot of romantic interactions available for you to choose from when they're interacting with another Sim.

Related: The Sims 4: Things You Should Never Do

Obviously, that's not really how it works in real life, as romance takes time to grow and is special between the people involved. With this mod, players are able to make the romantic relationships between their Sim and the Sims around them more realistic. Certain romantic interactions will only be possible after different points in their romantic relationship. Interest and loyalty also play a factor in the acceptance or rejection of romantic interactions.
