Table of contents

The Sims 4 is the type of game that will just give you endless hours of content. You can make up your own storylines as you play and there's never a dull moment. The game has been out for quite a while now and it's still going strong. Although it's been revealed that there won't be any more expansions coming out this year, the latest expansion has tons of content to explore.

The Cats & Dogs Expansion had already introduced pets to the game but now with the Cottage Living expansion you get to have your own farm animals and they’re just as fun and as complex as cats and dogs. Six types of animals were added so let’s deep dive into all the newly added animals in this expansion and see what each of them has to offer.

Rabbits

You can find wild rabbits wandering around Henford-on-Bagley. You can also interact with tree stumps to lure a rabbit out. After you've befriended one by being nice to it and giving it presents, you will have the ability to place down a Wild Rabbit Home - from the Outdoor Activities tab in Build Mode - on your residential lot so they can help you around the farm.

You can "ask for gardening help" once you befriend a rabbit on your farm. They will eat weeds that grow on your plants and they will also... fertilize your crops.

You can rename wild rabbits and even put adorable accessories on them (get these at the Creature Keeper shop in Bramblewood). Although they're not house pets, your toddlers and kids can still interact with them and it's just the cutest thing! Be sure to do your best to keep foxes away as they will attack rabbits on your lot and can actually kill them.

Birds

Wild birds are an adorable addition to the game and they can be quite helpful as well. They are similar to rabbits because you befriend them in the same way they will lend you a hand around your farm. However, if your Sim leads a busy life, birds are a better option to have nearby since they require even less maintenance work - you don’t have to worry about nearby foxes, unlike with the rabbits you befriend.

You can find flocks of birds in birdhouses located in the newly added world of Henford-on-Bagley. The birdhouses look like tree stumps with holes in them. You can sing to them and interact with them to increase your friendship. However, if they don’t enjoy your singing, they will poop on your Sim. Give them gifts as well and eventually, once you’ve built up enough friendship with the flock, they will give you gifts and eat bugs on your farm so you don’t have to keep spraying your plants for bugs.

Foxes

Wild foxes have also been added to the game. They're beautiful creatures but they can be a bit of a pain to deal with since they will occasionally attack the rabbits and chickens on your lot, plus they'll also try to sneak into your chicken coop to steal eggs.

Thankfully there are ways to deal with this, you can install a fox alarm, get a pet dog, or some llamas since these will all scare foxes away. You can also befriend a fox and ask it to not steal from you, however doing this with every fox that shows up can get old quickly.

Just like rabbits, you can also put cute outfits on them but, unfortunately, that's the best interaction you can have with these animals. You can interact with them and increase your friendship with them but there are no practical benefits.

Chickens

Owning chickens may sound easy but it's a more difficult job than it seems. In Cottage Living you purchase up to eight birds per Chicken Coop - that means chicks, hens, and roosters. Chickens come in three colors, white, brown, and black. And, eventually, you can even turn your chickens into golden or evil chickens with golden and obsidian treats, respectively. These chickens will be able to produce golden and obsidian eggs and they will actually help with, for example, product quality, and keeping foxes away.

You can install an auto-feeder so you don't have to keep feeding them by manually using the scatter food nearby option. If you keep them fed and their habitat clean then they'll produce eggs for you to collect.

There are various types of eggs and, if you own a rooster, some of the eggs will even be hatchable. Give chickens different types of animal treats so that they'll produce different colored eggs.

Cows

If you want to be a cow owner in The Sims, you need to purchase an Animal Shed. Unlike chicken coops, each shed can only harbor one cow. At first, you can only choose between brown, white, and spotted cows but later you'll be able to feed them treats to change their color.

To keep the cows happy simply keep their shed clean and feed them regularly. You can also install an auto-feeder in the shed so the game will automatically restock it with food whenever necessary. If kept in good conditions, they'll produce milk - feed them animal treats if you want them to produce other types of milk. You can use milk for cooking or give it away as a gift.

Llamas

Llamas have always been a very predominant animal in The Sims series so it's only logical that they'd make an appearance in Cottage Living.

Just like cows, each llama requires its own Animal Shed in order to live a happy life. At first, you will be able to purchase either a white or a beige llama but afterwards you will be able to change their color with animal treats. Shear llama wool so that you can then use it for cross-stitching, give as gifts, or hand-in to the Creature Caretaker to creature animal clothes.

You can enter llamas, cows, and chickens in Finchwick's fair. Raise your relationship with these animals and bring them over to enter the competition and take home the big prize. And, you'll be happy to know that clothes aren't rabbit and fox exclusive, you can also purchase Animal Clothes for these three larger-scale animals.
