The Sims 4: Discover University is a new expansion pack themed around the experience of attending university. Almost every detail in the pack is centered around how university life works and the experience of attending, with a huge amount of attention paid to the little details. Here's what you can expect.

Starting Your Journey

University life begins with applications, loans, and scholarships, just as in real life. You can apply for a scholarship based on several areas including income, skills and past education. If successful, the amount will cover some or all of the cost of your classes and sometimes your accommodation as well. If you can't access funding you can pay for your studies from household funds or via a loan, which is paid back with interest after graduation.

The main difference between the universities is the range of distinguished degrees they offer. Each campus offers different subjects as a distinguished degree. These higher-level qualifications will give you a bigger boost after graduation but require work to get into. Your sim will need to have acquired relevant skills and worked hard at high school in order to pursue these courses.

Once enrolled you also have options for how many classes you take. You can take up to four per term, or three plus an elective module. You need to complete twelve classes in total to graduate, so you can vary the length of time spent at university.

Rabbit holes And Extra Tasks

Classes themselves operate on a rabbit hole basis but this does not detract from the gameplay experience. Each class is accompanied by a set of homework and a task, such as an exam, presentation or term paper. Each of these tasks must be completed within the in-game week that a term lasts. This means that a full load of four classes will actually give you surprisingly little free time.

If you wish to get involved in university life on a larger scale by attending sports events, participating in debates or joining a secret society then you'll need to be careful with your time or take on a lesser load. If you skip too many classes you'll end up on academic probation.

University Life

The gameplay experience of this pack is very much focused around communal living, societies and other things that make up the university experience as a whole. There are study groups to join, spirit rallies to attend, debates to be had and statues to deface.

Both universities have a friendly rivalry and pranks and mayhem can very much become part of your university experience if you desire.

There is a great deal of flexibility for those who love storytelling, with the new activities and tasks allowing for many different stories to be told. As students can live off-campus and can be of any age from young adult upwards, the flexibility is huge. Overall, the focus of this pack is very much on creating an engaging gameplay experience, something many will be incredibly happy to see.

The Sims 4 Discover University releases on November 15th, 2019 for PC and December 17th for PC. This preview is based on a hands-on PC demo conducted by TheGamer at the EA offices.
