The appeal of The Sims has always been that it mimics everyday life and as the times change - so must Sims. There’ve been complaints that the upgrades in the upcoming Sims are woefully 2018 (or now 2019, but that’s always been the exact point).

Sure, some people don’t see being a social media influencer as a real job but nonetheless, the people doing it are making money or they wouldn’t be doing it. And so The Sims follows - if there’s a living to be made out of it, there’s definitely someone out there making that living. Especially when it means so much more time with your Sim!

Updated February 27th, 2020 By Helen Ashcroft: As The Sims 4 continues to grow, careers are getting more complex than ever and some are beginning to overlap. There are now several different paths relating to being an influencer or social media personality.

The first is the Social Media career, introduced in City Living. This is a work from home career that enables your sim to start at the bottom as a rag reviewer and become either an Internet Personality or a PR Rep. More recently, a free update gave all players these work from home influencer options by adding a Style Influencer career, which works on a similar basis to allow players to become Trend Setters or Stylists.

This guide has been adjusted to clarify details about the Get Famous expansion pack's fame and influencer mechanics and the differences between these and the more structured Social Media and Style Influencer careers. It also touches briefly on the recently added freelance career options.

10 You Don't Need A Structured Career Path To Be An Influencer

In Sims 4: City Living, one of the career options is to work from home and choose Social Media as a profession. Similarly, all players can pursue the Style Influencer career which works in the same way. The Get Famous Influencer path is separate from both of these options.

Becoming an Influencer in Get Famous simply requires your sim to begin to make videos or mix music using the new items, More Views Video Station and Mix Master Music Production station respectively.

9 Becoming A Vlogger

If you've always dreamed of being a famous vlogger then you need to purchase the More Views Video Station. This will allow you to start recording and uploading videos and vlogs. You'll also be able to edit, add transitions and even combine videos before you upload them, once you have the skills.

Videos will earn your sim royalties, in the same vein as writing books or songs in the base game. Simply produce, upload and watch the money roll in.

8 Making And Mixing Music

If your interests are more musical then the Mix Master Production Station is what you need. This will allow you to produce, remix, burn and release tracks.

As with book writing, you can choose to release your music on your own or sign with a label to get different benefits. Signing with Maxis Music Machine will maximize your musical earnings.

7 The Media Production Skill

The Media Production skill is new in Get Famous and can be leveled up using the video station or sound mixer items. You can also command a streaming drone to follow you and record a video or livestream to further boost your skills. It's only a five-level skill and maxing it out is well worth the rewards.

Leveling this skill will unlock more options for video creators, including transitions, effects and combining videos. You'll also unlock new tracks and remix options for the music station.

6 Using The Social Media Career As A Springboard

If this all seems overwhelming then the Social Media career from City Living offers a great springboard. The work from home career will boost your skills in a more structured way as it offers a choice of rabbit hole option or tasks to do at home.

For those unsure about building a career just using production skills, then climbing a few rungs of the Social Media career can help get you started. You'll gain some useful skills and it will help with storytelling as you move towards independent creation. You can also build fame and a following by posting to Simstagram.

The social media career also involves livestreaming and video production in later tiers, giving cross over with the Get Famous influencer path.

5 The Style Influencer Career

Another addition to the Influencer and Social Media careers is the free base game update, Style Influencer. This work from home career is very similar to the Social Media career but allows you to become a Stylist or PR guru. You can even give sims makeovers.

Building your writing, painting and charisma skills will all help if you choose this path. As with other normal careers, this one is very structured so is perfect if you want to be an influencer with a clear path. You can also earn a camera, digital sketchpad, and PC before you even hit level five.

If your Influencer career takes this path then note that the daily task of taking photos needs to be done with a phone, rather than a camera.

4 Tapping Into The Fame System

Producing creative work, either videos or music, will also enable you to tap into the fame system. The more you produce, the more fans you'll gain and the more perks (and drawbacks) of fame are available to you.

Anything that puts your name out into public taps into the fame system, unless you go into the menu options and choose to turn it off, keeping your sim out of the limelight.

3 Creativity Adds Depth

If you want to truly enjoy the influencer experience then building creative skills is essential. While the vlogger and musical influencer paths aren't driven by a structured career, having solid creative skills will help storytellers flesh out their experiences.

Once you start to gain fame, creative skills can be used to have your sims write their own autobiography or their own songs, to accompany their remixes. If you want to bring in other sims then a fellow skilled artist could take their photograph or paint their portrait.

2 Taking On Freelance Work

If your creative sim wants to make some extra simoleons then the freelance careers offer a great option. You can become a freelance writer, painter, artist or programmer and after joining an agency you will then be able to take on specific jobs as and when you want to.

These careers work well as a sideline while you are building a following in your true passion. For musicians, you can also write music as well as busking or DJing for tips. This will build not only your riches but also your story.

1 Moving Into Acting

As you become more famous, you may want to transition into an alternative career. One of the most obvious is the new active career, acting. Why not make the change from vlogger to silver screen star?

Acting is one of the most highly paid careers in the game and makes a great natural follow on from earning some money as a vlogger or musical genius. You can also follow your sim to work and truly immerse yourself in the creative experience.
