The release of a new Sims 4 content roadmap is usually a cause for celebration in the Sims community and today was no exception, until they actually read it. Titled Season of Selves, the roadmap for Fall is the first we've seen with no stuff packs, no game packs and no expansions listed. Despite September seeing the release of Realm of Magic in 2019, and Star Wars: Journey To Batuu in 2020, this year there will be no game pack to cozy up with as the colder nights draw in. Instead, on offer are four kits, the divisive new content type that was launched back in March of this year.

In a Twitch Livestream promoting the concept of kits, Dave Miotke, also known as Sim Guru Ninja, spoke about the new DLC type in depth. "These are little bite-sized snack packs to add new content to your game," Miotke stated, "If you think of an expansion pack and a game pack as a big meal, these are those little snacks in between" Throughout the stream, this analogy was continued with the packs also being referred to as "little palette cleansers to keep you going while you're waiting for those really big packs." Now it seems the team has foregone meals in favor of stuffing Sims fans full of snacks and hoping they add up to a substantial meal.

Sims 4 autumn 2021 roadmap

The roadmap is made worse by the fact that while Cottage Living was released at the beginning of August, it was followed by the Industrial Loft Kit. This means that by the time we approach the holiday season we will have had nothing but kits for three to four months, depending on the timing of the next release. That's a lot of content that's been specifically marketed as tackling themes with limited appeal.

While it is worth noting that kits are better value for money than say The Sims 3 store, and some are notably more in-depth than others, they are still severely lacking when compared to the alternative DLC types for The Sims 4. They have always been sold to the community as extras to appeal to a niche market and to plug content gaps. However, the issue is when all that's on offer is snacks, even those who eat them all get hungry again very quickly without a proper meal.

Even some of the more prominent members of The Sims 4 community can't hold in their disappointment. Long-time Game Changer Mollie, aka The English Simmer, tweeted out her "big sad."

Meanwhile, James Turner, a notable critic of kits, had sarcasm practically dripping from this tweet...

Even Game Changers who remained quiet about the four kit revelation couldn't help but be openly confused by the last sentence on the slide which makes about as much sense as the other decisions made here.

While we don't yet know the content of these kits we do know that the phrase "customize your space with color" doesn't mean the return of the color wheel.

As the community waits for further details, those free updates look likely to be doing some heavy lifting if they're to keep Simmers happy until the next roadmap. Here's hoping that the pattern of releasing expansions during the holiday season that dates back to 2015 isn't also broken by a stuff pack.
