SingStar's servers will be shut down on January 31, 2020, so if you want to play the games online, you had better do it now.

As the last decade turned into this one, it felt as if music-based games were very much the order of the day. Games that required an instrument instead of a controller. Guitar Hero led the way, Rock Band followed, and other popular titles such as SingStar and DJ Hero cashed in on the hype. It could even be argued that dance games like Just Dance and Dance Dance Revolution were a part of the movement.

It's not entirely clear what happened to bring that movement to a grinding halt. The genre still exists, but is nowhere near as prevalent as it was 8-10 years ago. Perhaps the boom of being able to play almost any and all games online has drawn gamers away from wanting to be in a room playing instruments with all of their gamer friends.

It has been two years since the last SingStar game was released, with no further titles on the horizon. Not a good sign for fans of the games, and we come bearing even more bad news. As of January 31, 2020, Sony will be shutting down the SingStar servers, reports IGN. That means no online capabilities for any of the games across both PS3 and PS4.

All offline features will remain across both platforms, but the news is even worse for SingStar players on PS3. While PS4 singers will still be able to re-download songs they have previously purchased, if you play on PS3, those deleted tracks will soon be gone forever. If there are any songs you have bought and then deleted, re-download them now before it's too late.

Online leaderboards and sharing videos to social media platforms will be gone from the games forever. Plus, trophies that require players to sing online will be permanently unattainable. If you are a completionist, and the thought of missing trophies will torment you forever, now's the time to dust off your microphone and get to work. Singstar online is on life support, don't leave that one last game until it's too late.
