Besides providing gamers with some of the best games in existence, The Elder Scrolls series has produced some of the funniest memes in existence too (or at least, in the gaming world). Among these is a bevy of memes dedicated to Argonians - the series' resident bipedal lizard race. Argonians seem inherently meme-able because of their outlandish appearance, amusing speech habits, and hilarious names (Oblivion's Argonian pirate Hauls-Ropes-Faster, or Skyrim's wandering reprobate Deep-In-His-Cups come to mind).
It's difficult to decide which of the internet's delightful creations are the funniest, but here are ten memes that are certainly up there with the best and most relatable for all Elder Scrolls fans alike.
10 A Race To Be The Best
Because of their incredibly meme-conducive nature, Argonians are often not taken very seriously. This paired with Elder Scrolls lore stating that they were taken as slaves by the Dark Elves during the First Era shows they're a race that has been rather marginalized. In fact, the ongoing tension between Argonians and Dark Elves has also become the target of many memes across the internet.
Basically, Argonians often feel a need to prove themselves in the eyes of the other races of Tamriel. This is quite unfortunate, considering they're actually pretty hardcore and come with a range of really useful unique traits like the ability to breathe underwater and resist diseases.
9 An Acquired Taste
Another little jab at the Argonian's alternative appearance. Although there might be some disagreement around whether or not this guy can be considered handsome, surely we can all agree he looks pretty badass. Not that this should be surprising, but Argonians are one of the few races that are entirely unrelated to man and mer, which is obviously why they look so unique.
This meme specimen also alludes to how funny interactions can get in The Elder Scrolls thanks to the random repetition of generic NPC dialogue, regardless of context. Or maybe Norri just has a thing for Argonians.
8 Lusty Argonian Drake
A list of the funniest Elder Scrolls memes wouldn't be complete without at least one mention of the famed Lusty Argonian Maid. If somehow you've evaded all mention of this work of literary genius then firstly, how unfortunate for you, and furthermore, here's all you need to know: it's apparently better than Fifty Shades of Grey. Okay, granted that's not a very prestigious accolade.
Copies of "Volume 1" of The Lusty Argonian Maid can be found throughout the series, in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, with an extra volume available in the latter. The stories are short snapshots of said lusty maid Lifts-Her-Tail and her employer's somewhat implicit banter. It's become a running joke amongst the community and an obvious target for meme-ification.
7 Don't Mess With The Argonians
Here's an interesting tidbit: during the Oblivion crisis, a faction of Argonians managed to grind the Daedric invasion of their homeland Black Marsh to a halt, something which was unheard of in any other province of Tamriel.
With their portals in place, Daedra poured into Black Marsh but the native Argonians poured right back into Oblivion, annihilating scores of Daedra. Their rebellion was so strong that the Dremora lieutenants were forced to shut the portals down to prevent further destruction of their forces.
6 Enter The Zucc
Ah, yes. This would inevitably come up, wouldn't it? The internet decided that Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg looks a bit lizardy, and as a result, it has become a running joke that he must be part of the Illuminati.
So of course, it wouldn't take long for Reddit to produce this juicy hybrid meme. Sorry, Zucc, but it's a keeper.
5 Arcadia The Astute
Another prime example of The Elder Scrolls' goofy NPC AI in action. Any seasoned Skyrim player will be familiar with one of Arcadia the Apothecary's favorite lines: "You look rather pale. Could be Ataxia..."
Of course, she will throw this unwelcome diagnosis at you regardless of what race your character belongs to or how un-pale he or she looks (must be just as amusing for the fur-covered Khajiit characters too). Arcadia is obviously just trying to sway you into buying her anti-Ataxia potions, but she should probably put more points into her speechcraft skills first.
4 The Many Burdens Of Lydia
Poor Lydia. Once the player's character gets the title of Thane of Whiterun bestowed upon them, it is possible to take Lydia on as a personal housecarl and follower. She's quite the strong lady - both physically and mentally, thanks to all the turmoil she is routinely dragged through by the player.
As part of her responsibilities, she can carry all the stuff you can't carry yourself in your own invisible backpack. From 15 dragon bones to 100 potions of fortify stamina that you know you'll never actually use, to 3000 copies of The Lusty Argonian Maid - she's your gal.
If you listen closely, you can almost hear the pained recital of her line "I am sworn to carry your burdens."
3 Important Matters
This is a classic Elder Scrolls moment and yet another example of the games' flawless AI system. Although, in this particular case it isn't actually very unrealistic. Of all possible matters, sleep certainly is an important one.
What's just particularly funny is the plain arrogance that this line is delivered with, and the fact that our Argonian friend has absolutely zero shame. He's just gonna halt your conversation and tuck himself right in as you watch.
2 Small But Spikey
You have to start somewhere. Every Elder Scrolls player knows that feeling when you're just starting your game off, a lowly level one grunt still finding your feet.
Still, just like this little guy, nothing is going to get in the way of the almighty Argonian Dragonborn. Not even a fire-breathing Alduin can curb the attacks of your iron sword dealing an earth-shattering 7 damage points.
1 "You Are The One From My Dreams..."
This one represents a branch of Oblivion memes that have taken the internet by storm. Although Oblivion is one of the most masterful pieces of gaming to date, it has not escaped the clutches of absurdity. The game's character creation in particular. It's designed in such a way as to allow for the most ridiculously grotesque character creations imaginable.
In these cases, it's priceless when Uriel Septim stoically delivers his famous lines near the start of the game: "Let me see your face... you are the one from my dreams." Must be pretty terrifying dreams.
