No matter how many times it gets released or how buggy it might be, Skyrim always finds a way to deliver a great experience every time you play it, and a big part of that is the quests you find scattered throughout its world. Some are one-off events for side characters that never return, while others intertwine your character with the story of a particular group such as the Companions, the closest thing Skyrim has to a Fighter's Guild.

These hardened warriors make their home in Whiterun, which means you're likely to encounter them pretty early in your playthrough of the game. But until you make the effort to join them, you'll be missing out on a series of amazing quests and your only opportunity to become a werewolf.

10 Family Heirloom

Vilkas stands outdoors with a vista of mountains at his back

This radiant quest might not have any direct impact on the storyline of the Companions but that doesn't mean it isn't fun. Speaking to Skjor or Vilkas can get you a version of this quest which will send you after a different item in a different location every time you receive it. The major benefit here is that you get to travel all over Skyrim's amazing and unique map.

It's also a great way of earning some gold early in the game and finding fast travel locations that will become essential later on when you need to get around the map and have had enough of walking or riding on your horse.

9 Retrieval

Skyrim Wuuthrad Retrieval

Another radiant quest but this time one that is linked directly to the completion of the Companions core questline. In this quest given by Aela the Huntress, you are given the location of a fragment of the legendary weapon known as Wuuthrad that has been stolen by the Companions enemies, the Silver Hand.

Not only does this quest offer up a great opportunity for some combat, but it also brings you closer to the fight between the werewolf hunting Silver Hand and the Companions themselves which the questline focuses on.

8 Striking the Heart

Skyrim Striking the Heart Aela

As part of the Companion's fight against the Silver Hand, you will sometimes receive this radiant quest to hunt down one of their lieutenants. These mini-bosses make for excellent encounters, especially on higher difficulties where you get to make the most of Skyrim's combat system.

This quest also helps develop the Silver Hand into a more threatening faction that exists outside of the Companion's encounters with them as it shows off their organized structure and the scale of their forces in Skyrim.

7 Purity

Skyrim Purity Vilkas

After completing the main questline of the Companions, talking to Farkas or Vilkas offers the player an opportunity to help them cure themselves of their Lycanthropy and free themselves from the curse of being a werewolf. It's an interesting quest that helps develop the character of the brothers despite lacking the mystery and tension of performing the ritual for the first time.

This quest is only available to you if you have extra Gelnmoril witch heads to spare at the end of the main Companions questline, however, so if you want to do it, make sure you stock up.

6 Trouble in Skyrim

Skyrim Trouble in Skyrim Shimmermist Cave

As a regular radiant quest Trouble in Skyrim isn't all that special, but the first time you are given it you are sent to Shimmermist Cave which leads to it becoming one of the most enjoyable radiant quests in the game. The cave offers up a series of fights with the Falmer and the various creatures that they keep as pets.

However, the best part of this quest comes when you reach the end of the cave - just as you think you've completed the quest, a Dwarven Centurion will activate making for an amazing mini-boss encounter that is tough even with the protection of some of the best-modded armor around.

5 Purity of Revenge

Skyrim Purity of Revenge

After the Companions home of Jorrvaskr is attacked by the Silver Hand and their leader is slain, the player is joined by Vilkas on a quest to recover the stolen fragments of the legendary Wuuthrad and avenge their fallen leader in the process.

It's a great quest that opens up the emotional side of the Companions as the player sees them filled with anger and sadness as they fight against the Silver Hand. It also sets up the finale of the Companions questline brilliantly as the group tries to determine their next course of action now their leader has fallen.

4 Proving Honor

Skyrim Proving Honor

Proving Honor starts as a fairly mundane quest as the player sets off on a quest to recover a fragment of Wuuthrad with Farkas to prove themselves worthy of joining the Companions. When the Silver Hand arrives and Farkas is forced to reveal his werewolf form, the quest suddenly goes from mundane to amazing.

Not only is this the first time most players saw a werewolf in Skyrim, but it also leaves the player with a myriad of questions that they want to find the answers to, drawing you into the questline of the Companions no matter how invested you were before this quest.

3 Blood's Honor

Skyrim Glenmoril Witch

When the leader of the Companions finds out about the player's fights with the Silver Hand, he will request to speak with them and begin the Blood's Honor quest where the player learns of a cure for being a werewolf. You are then sent to slay the witches of the Glenmoril Coven and bring back their heads which are a part of the cure.

While slaying the witches is fun in itself, where this quest really shines is the story and how it shows a difference of opinions between the leader of the Companions and his disciples when it comes to being a werewolf, adding nuance to characters who could easily have come off as generic axe-wielding warriors.

2 Glory Of The Dead

Skyrim Glory of the Dead

This is the final quest in the Companions questline and sees players explore the tomb of the legendary warrior Ysgramor before using the Glenmoril witch heads acquired in the Blood's Honor quest to cleanse Kodlak Whitemane's spirit of the werewolf curse, allowing his spirit to move on.

This quest also gives the player the option to cure themselves of the werewolf curse if they so choose. Despite it being completely optional, it does add a layer of complexity to the quest by forcing the player to weigh up the pros and cons of being a werewolf before making their decision.

1 The Silver Hand

Skyrim Werewolf - The Silver Hand Quest

The Silver Hand is by far the most memorable quest players get during their time with the Companions and is the reason most players join in the first place. This is because this quest allows the player to turn their character into a werewolf, granting them power that no other Elder Scrolls game has.

The thrill of becoming a werewolf and getting to use your new powers to fight against the Silver Hand is unmatched by any other quest in this questline and it might even be one of the best quests in the entire game.
