Serana is a unique character that was first introduced in the Dawnguard DLC for Skyrim. You first get a chance to interact with this character at the beginning of the DLC, and you will continue to form a relationship with her throughout the questline.
Serana is a Vampire Lord, and she is a very powerful character both in terms of intelligence and in her magical abilities. Serana does hide a few secrets, as does every vampire in the Volkihar clan, and as such, there are many things that you can learn about her if you take the time to research Serana and her interesting backstory.
Updated November 7, 2021, by Michael Caruso: Serana is one of the most interesting characters in Skyrim, which is why so many fans enjoy her presence as a companion. There's a lot you can learn about Serana that the game doesn't ever tell you, and a few things that are easy to miss if you aren't paying close attention to the optional dialogue in the Dawnguard DLC. Here are a few more facts you may not have known about Serana and how she functions as a companion in Skyrim.
13 Serana Can Mine Nearby Ore Veins
One of the strangest actions that Serana can perform in Skyrim is mining ore veins that you come across during your adventure. While Serana is following you, she may take out a pickaxe and start mining the ore.
This is particularly weird because Serana doesn't need to have a pickaxe in her inventory to mine ore. Serana may be using an unknown Conjuration spell to summon the pickaxe, but it's very unlikely. Regardless, Serana mining ore is something that you probably didn't notice since it doesn't have a large impact on the world around you.
12 Serana Has A Very High Health Stat
You may expect Serana to have a high Magicka stat since she's a mage; however, most of Serana's stat points are in her health. Serana's health is 541, which is higher than both her stamina and Magicka stats.
If you didn't realize that Serana has a high health stat, then this fact may tempt you to bring her with you as a companion at all times since she's such a durable character. It's worth mentioning that Serana does also have a high magicka stat at 468, but it's still smaller than her health stat.
11 Serana Can Interact With Crafting Work Stations
Similar to how Serana may stop to mine ore veins, she also occasionally stops to craft items. You can find Serana interacting with crafting stations such as Alchemy Labs or Grindstones, which is interesting considering she doesn't talk about crafting.
However, Serana has many talents, and she's been alive for a long time. It wouldn't be too surprising if Serana knew how to craft potions or other items. Enchanting and alchemy also fit her character quite well since she is a mage.
10 Serana Is Always Essential
Regardless of whether or not you finish the Dawnguard questline, Serana will always be an essential character, and as such, you can't kill her.
This is great if you want to keep Serana as a companion for the rest of the game because she can't get killed by enemies you're fighting. You may have missed the fact that Serana will stay essential even after finishing the main questline in the Dawnguard DLC since there's no reason that she needs to be essential.
9 You Can't Marry Serana, But She Does Have Dialogue About Marriage
You may be wondering if you can marry Serana after finishing the Dawnguard DLC; however, it's impossible to marry her without mods.
Although it's only possible to marry Serana with mods, it is still possible to ask for her hand in marriage if you are wearing an Amulet of Mara. Serana will respond that she doesn't think that it's the right fit and isn't interested in marrying the Dragonborn, regardless of the decisions you make during the DLC, but she still considers you to be a good friend.
8 Serana Has Nord Blood
Serana has Nord blood, which may come as a surprise if you expect her to be an Imperial or Breton. Serana doesn't have a Nord accent, and she looks a lot more similar to an Imperial than a Nord.
Although Serana's race isn't at all important to the Dawnguard DLC's story, it is an interesting tidbit about Serana that is easy to completely overlook while playing through the DLC.
7 Serana Holds Resentment Towards Both Of Her Parents
It may seem that Serana would only hold resentment towards her father since her mother, Valerica, tried to save her from Harkon's plan. However, Serana dislikes the choice that her mother made by sealing her away and feels that she wasn't allowed to make this decision by herself.
Once you consider all the factors in the situation, it's easy to see Serana's side of the story and understand why she is upset with both her mother and father. It's easy to miss that Serana holds resentment towards her mother since it is only briefly mentioned in dialogue during the DLC.
6 Serana Has More Unique Dialogue Than Other Companions
Most companions in Skyrim don't have very much unique dialogue; however, this is one way that Serana is entirely unique.
Serana has interesting dialogue relating to her being a vampire, and she also makes many other comments while the two of you are exploring Skyrim. Serana will respond if you are in a scenic location or if you are outside while the sun is shining, among many other situations.
5 Serana Is From The Second Era
Serana was born in the Second Era, which means that she is from hundreds of years prior to the events of Skyrim. You might already be aware that Serana is from a different time period; however, it's unclear to many fans exactly which era she's actually from.
Since Serana was born in the Second Era, her perception of the world is very different from other characters, even in ways that aren't necessarily noticeable during dialogue with her.
4 Serana Is Known As A "Daughter Of Coldharbour"
Molag Bal granted this nickname because Coldharbour is his Daedric realm. You will hear this nickname if you research into the backstory of the Volkihar vampire clan.
Not only is Serana referred to as a "Daughter Of Coldharbour," but her mother and other women that are Vampire Lords are also commonly referred to as this nickname within the lore of The Elder Scrolls franchise and the Dawnguard DLC.
3 Serana And The Dawnguard Will Eventually Get Along
If you side with the Dawnguard while playing through the DLC, then you will experience Isran and other vampire hunters talking down to Serana and acting as if she is a creature rather than a person.
After finishing the DLC and defeating Harkon, Isran and other Dawnguard members will change their tune and start acting nicer towards Serana since it seems that she has proved her worth to them. Most of this dialogue is easy to miss because it occurs very briefly and only if you side with the Dawnguard.
2 Serana Is Skeptical Of The Dragonborn After Their First Meeting And Won't Share An Inventory With You
After meeting with you for the first time, Serana is skeptical of you and your intentions. Serana is right to be wary since she doesn't know the true intentions of the Dawnguard or the Dragonborn.
What you may not know about this is that Serana will refuse to share an inventory with you, among other commands that most followers would usually listen to.
1 You Can Cure Serana Of Vampirism By Talking To Falion
It's possible to cure Serana of her vampirism after finishing the Dawnguard DLC. You can bring Serana to Falion, who resides in Morthal, and he can cure her of her vampirism by performing a ritual; you can also do this for your character if you wish to cure your own vampirism.
You may have missed the fact that it's possible to cure Serana of her vampirism, and it's no surprise because many fans don't want to cure her in the first place.
