Could there be any greater honor than to be immortalized as an Amiibo? Of course not. I hope Sakurai appreciates this gesture.

As all Switch owners will know, it’s been a bit of a slow year for releases. Nintendo Switch Online also appeared, and was… well, shonky is probably the operative word. The system had to finish off 2018 in style, and it’s certainly looking to do that with its Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate one-two punch.

While Pokémon: Let’s Go has been a bit controversial among the fanbase (cutting out elements like held items and breeding simplified the gameplay, which didn’t sit well with a lot of fans), Smash Ultimate has always been a huge deal and is always going to be.

That’s not to say that Smash overlord, Masahiro Sakurai, hasn’t made some questionable decisions. For one thing, there’s a darn piranha plant being added to the roster next year, and it has hilarious little inexplicable feet. He works his heart, lungs and earthy soul right out of his mouth for this series, and still takes the brunt of the internet’s snark, outrage, and outraged snark.

You’ve got to feel for the guy. You’ve got to appreciate the fruits of his labors. You may not have to make an Amiibo of him, but you certainly can. And somebody has.

Now, we reported way back in July that every returning character featured in Smash Ultimate would be getting its own Amiibo. What we did not know was that two super talented fans would come along and make a custom Sakurai Amiibo. As reported by Nintendo Life, Sean Hicks created the original art for the sculpt, and friend and collaborator George Crudo adapted that into an actual model.

If you’re one of those Amiibo/Smash addicts who want the whole set of characters from Smash Ultimate, you’re sure to be upset that you can’t add one Sakurai to rule them all to your collection. Since the line was introduced, we’ve seen some great custom Amiibos, but this one’s on a whole new level. The only question is, did they include a little nerf hammer, for the teeny Sakurai to wield when characters inevitably start getting messed with?
