It’s been a wild one for the modding community this week. While we have the usual Nintendo takedown, we were gifted with some hilariously petty projects too, as mods were used to protest against a lack of No Man’s Sky updates, as well as too many Skyrim re-releases.

From Smash Bros. to Nier Automata, here are the mods that everyone was talking about this week.

Nintendo Shuts Down A Tournament For Using A Brawl Mod

Starting our rundown on a familiar note, Nintendo yet again went after a mod - but this time it’s even more bizarre. Esports event Riptude has had to cancel its Project+ tournament following legal pressure from Nintendo. Project+ is essentially an unofficial patch for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. which requires a legitimate copy of the game to play, as it rebalances the fighters and changing the movesets of some. Despite this, it was enough to draw Nintendo’s ire, so the game will no longer be played as part of the event.

No Man’s Sky Players Protest By Modding In Sean Murray

Moving over to another disgruntled fanbase, we have this eye-catching No Man’s Sky mod. It has now been three weeks since No Man’s Sky’s fifth birthday, which was originally set to be the launch date for the Frontiers update. However, that still hasn’t materialised, and one player is protesting that… by modding its creator into the game. From the exocraft to blobs, the modder pledges to mod Murray’s face onto a new object every day until the update is released.

The Nier Automata/Among Us Crossover You’ve Been Waiting For

Fans have been pretty creative this week, huh? The Among Us mod for Nier Automata transforms the Small Stubby machines into the crewmates from the hit social deduction game. More like Small Sussy machines, am I right? Ha.

Honestly, you have to appreciate the effort. The modder even went to the trouble of adding cel-shading to the crewmates, so they didn’t feel too out of place. I mean, I’m not sure if it works, but you have to respect the grind.

Skyrim Can Finally Be Played In Third Person

At long last - ten years and 12 re-releases later - Skyrim is now playable in third-person mode. This is thanks to the True Directional Movement mod, which is making waves in the modding community this week. It works by bringing Skyrim’s third-person combat more in line with what you’d get in other titles such as Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War. Now, you can attack in any direction, as well as lock onto specific enemies. Look, if they’re going to release it in 2021, at least make it play like something from 2021.

...Or Not Played At All

Skyrim modders have a reputation for fixing the game, with their work commonly regarded as unofficial patches. That’s not quite the case here, however, as one modder has taken it upon themselves to make Skyrim literally unplayable.

You read that right - you try and start a save with this mod installed, and it simply won’t let you. Save yourself hundreds of hours with just this one mod! Unfortunately, Nexus Mods didn’t find this as funny as everyone else, and took it off the website. The NoSkyrim fans are a dedicated bunch though, and are currently campaigning for it to be reinstated. At the time of writing, the petition is sitting at 594 signatures.
