The 2018 Game Awards happened on the same day that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released (depending on where you are in the world) and many fans suspected that there would be some kind of announcement regarding the game at the ceremony.

We now know who the first DLC character will be for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and it’s someone that most people never saw coming – Joker from Persona 5.

We were only given a cutscene trailer of Joker, so we don’t know anything about his move set or how he will play. Masahiro Sakurai stated that all of the DLC characters (save for Piranha Plant) had yet to enter development during the last Super Smash Bros. Direct, so we may not see any footage of Joker for a while.

There are several possibilities for Joker’s move set, with one being that he can switch Personas mid-battle in order to give himself different moves or to change the properties of his current moves. Joker used a blade & pistol combination in battle, as well as magical attacks (with the aid of his Personas) so there are tons of options for him to use.

Joker’s Final Smash will likely involve him summoning Satanael or summoning the other Phantom Thieves for a group attack, but a better one would involve Morgana forcing everyone to go to bed, giving Joker a chance to KO them.

Joker will also come with a stage and a selection of music from Persona 5, with the latter part possibly being the most exciting aspect of his addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as Persona 5 had some of the best battle music in video game history.

There are several possibilities for the Persona 5 stage, with the chaotic Mementos being the most likely candidate.

The presence of Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate means that the Shin Megami Tensei series will finally be receiving a representative in the Super Smash Bros. series. Joker was a good candidate for this role, considering how popular Persona 5 was, but Mara was clearly robbed, as the fans love her more than anyone.

Joker from Persona 5 will be the first paid DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and he will likely be available for download in 2019.
