Even though they aren't Nintendo games, the recent releases of the remade Resident Evil 3 and Final Fantasy VII Remake has everyone thinking about the future. If these games weren't great, perhaps there wouldn't be so many fan outcries for games to get this treatment. They are indeed hot, though.

The Super Nintendo is no stranger to things getting remade, either. Trials of Mana also released in April, making it a big month for Square Enix. In the past, games like Final Fantasy IV, Mega Man X, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time also got the remake treatment. So what other SNES games need remakes and which are fine just the way they are? To keep this list varied, each section will play into some specific categories. Here are 5 SNES games that deserve a remake and 5 more that don't.

10 NEEDS A REMAKE: Gunple: Gunman’s Proof

Gunple: Gunman’s Proof was, and still is, a Japanese exclusive Super Famicom game. That said fans have patched it into English. An official release would be nice as well on top of Nintendo helping to remake it.

Think of it like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but as a Western with the oddity of EarthBound. Making it look like the toy aesthetic of Link’s Awakening would be great. Remake or not, this game is worth seeking out.

The best counterpoint to that is to talk about A Link to the Past itself. While it too could benefit from that toy design, it is not needed.

The pixel art looks amazing as ever and the gameplay, from the hacking and slashing to the puzzle solving, is this series at its finest in 2D.

8 NEEDS A REMAKE: Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country is a great game to talk about co-op; that is the one thing that is still fun about it. While the graphics were groundbreaking at the time since it proved that the Super Nintendo still had life in it, they do not hold up today.

Taking care of the visuals along with toning down the infamous difficulty would be a good place to start for the remake.

7 SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHED: The Legend of the Mystical Ninja

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja might be a more obscure game on this list. After all, of the twenty plus games in the Goemon series, barely a handful made it to the West.

That said it is still worth highlighting. Part top-down adventure, part 2D side-scroller, this whacky action game from Konami is a blast alone or with a friend. It has a lot of personality that doesn't need any modern tinkering to fix or improve.

6 NEEDS A REMAKE: Breath Of Fire

In the the turn-based RPG category, let’s highlight Breath of Fire. Capcom, as a company, no longer has an RPG series under its belt. One could argue that this series is still alive on mobile, or that Dragon’s Dogma and Monster Hunter are RPGs, which they are and aren’t, but the point is they don’t have any real big series to stand next to on the likes of Final Fantasy.

Of the series it did have, Breath of Fire was among the best so a proper remake/reboot of the original should get old school fans pumped.

5 SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHED: Chrono Trigger

The SNES is home to some of the best RPGs of all time, most of which don’t need a single ounce of remake magic to find an audience today.

While it would be cool to see Chrono Trigger get remade, it honestly doesn’t need it because it still feels as fresh today as it did over twenty years ago. It was a game ahead of its time, which is funny considering it is about time travel.

4 NEEDS A REMAKE: Super Castlevania IV

The MetroidVania genre came about as an evolution of the Castlevania series merging with the gameplay stylings of Super Metroid. That was for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and ever since then, even though the series is barely around any more, the games became just that, MetroidVanias.

What if Konami went back to remake the games prior to the PS1 as MetroidVanias, like Super Castlevania IV? This would be like a remake of a remake, but hey, third time's the charm.

3 SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHED: Super Metroid

The obvious counterpart to the previous entry is Super Metroid. One of the best remakes of all time was Metroid Zero for the Game Boy Advance, which took many aspects of this game to remake the first. It actually might be better now than this game!

The fan base can honestly be split regarding this, depending on who one asks. The point is that while a remake could prove beneficial, Super Metroid still plays, looks, and sounds great on whatever system one happens to check this out on.

2 NEEDS A REMAKE: Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars

There's no better way to end a list of SNES games than with a double Mario category. Yes, the legendary plumber deserves his pair of entries. Like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario RPG was a Marvel to look at. 3D graphics on the SNES? Wow!

It looks even rougher than that game does now though which is saying something. Everything else about it is great so just the facelift, please, Nintendo. If Nintendo won’t put Geno in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate then this is the next best thing. Or perhaps, even better.

1 SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHED: Super Mario World

And of course, this list would not be complete without Super Mario World. What else is there to say? This is the jump-happy plumber at his finest in 2D.

Super Mario World remains easily accessible to a wide audience and can even be a yearly ritual for some. For that statement to remain true almost thirty years later is a true marvel and a testament to why this game should be left as is.
