Despite the reaction to the way Sonic looked in the movie after its first trailer dropped, the blue blur's big-screen debut went incredibly well. Paramount clearly thought that would be the case as it introduced Tails to the movie during that first film's credits scene. A smart move as two years later, the sequel to the hugely successful first Sonic movie is performing even better at the domestic box office. The director of both movies Jeff Fowler revealed on Twitter this weekend that Sonic 2 has now raked in more than $150 million at the US box office. Fowler broke the news with a shot of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles at the cinema. However, he quickly reposted a different pic after fans pointed out Sonic and Tails had popcorn but their echidna buddy had been forced to go without.RELATED: Sonic 2 Is Proof That There's Nothing Wrong With Human Characters“FIXED (can't let our man Knuckles go hungry) THANK YOU ALL for your AMAZING SUPPORT,” Fowler tweeted. The director fixed it by giving Knuckles a big basket of grapes to work through, presumably while watching Sonic 2. If you've seen the movie or one of the final trailers that dropped right before its arrival, you'll know Knuckles hates pretty much everything about Earth, but grapes make the shortlist of things he can tolerate.

The news that Sonic 2 has now moved past $150 million at the domestic box office means it has solidified its spot as the highest-grossing video game movie in US history. That record was officially broken a week ago when it was revealed Sonic 2 had beaten the previous record holder, the first Sonic movie. The gap between it and the rest of the top four, which includes Detective Pikachu and Uncharted, is an incredibly small one, so Sonic 2 will have to keep building on that lead to make sure it holds the record for as long as possible.

As for its worldwide numbers, Sonic 2 still has a long way to go if it hopes to be the most successful video game movie ever. All cards on the table, it isn't going to be, even though it hasn't hit cinemas in major markets like Japan and Russia just yet. Right now it's number 11, with Warcraft and even Rihanna's Battleship above it.
