2021 might have been Sonic's 30th anniversary, and Sega did a lot to celebrate it, but 2022 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the blue blur. Sonic Origins, a collection of the very first Sonic games, launches on all major platforms next month, and as of right now, Sonic Frontiers is still on track to be here before the end of the year. The biggest project to come out of Camp Sonic so far this year, however, is Sonic 2.

The big screen sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog hit cinemas in some parts of the world a month ago, and then the US a week later. Thanks to maintaining a spot in the top three in its third week at the US box office, and raking in an additional $15.6 million in the process, it has become the highest-grossing video game movie ever at the domestic box office. According to Box Office Mojo, that brings its running total up to $146.2 million.

As highlighted by Tails' Channel, those third week ticket sales moved Sonic 2 past the other four video game movies it shares the top five with. Tomb Raider, Detective Pikachu, Uncharted, and the first Sonic film. There's only a little more than $2 million separating those top four movies, which could mean there's some movement between them should any be re-released. However, with some time still to go before Sonic 2 leaves theaters, it will likely open up the gap on its predecessor in the coming weeks.

As for the worldwide box office, Sonic 2 still has a long way to go. According to VGC, the Sega sequel currently sits in tenth position with $288 million to its name so far. Familiar foes Detective Pikachu and Uncharted are above it, while The Angry Birds movie and Warcraft also made more at the global box office than Sonic 2 has managed to date. In fact, it will need to sell a lot more tickets to dethrone Warcraft which raked in an impressive $439 million once all was said and done.

Paramount decided Sonic was worthy of more movies long before it was confirmed to be a box office hit. As a matter of fact, it greenlit Sonic 3 and a Knuckles spinoff show long before the blue blur returned to the big screen. One producer has even been throwing around the term Sonic Cinematic Universe. If you have seen Sonic 2, and stuck around for its credits scene, then there's no doubting that's the plan moving forward.
