It hasn't been too long since the release of the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie, yet fans are eager to see the Blue Blur and his nemesis Shadow the Hedgehog throw down on the big screen. In fact, that won't be the only thing happening in Sonic 3, as key plot points of the movie may have been revealed early.

First spotted by Sonic Paradise (translated by Sonic Stadium), the latest issue of Hollywood trade magazine Production Weekly has a story on the third Sonic movie being in "active development," detailing several big events during the film and which characters will be involved. While none of these plot details have been confirmed by either Paramount or Sega, if you're really desperate to go into Sonic 3 spoiler-free then consider this your warning.

According to the magazine, Sonic 3 will allegedly have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fight it out with Shadow the Hedgehog - pretty unsurprising if you saw the post-credits scene in Sonic 2. However, the magazine also claims that Robotnik will create a "metallic version of Sonic" and that popular characters like Amy and Big the Cat will enter the movie via a dimensional portal.

If we're being cynical, there is one big sticking point with this synopsis. The magazine implies that Robotnik will have a large part to play in the movie, but the actor who plays him - Jim Carrey - announced his retirement before the release of Sonic 2. At the time, the movie's producers seemed to believe that they would be able to convince Carrey to stick around to cap off the trilogy, but as far as we know right now, he's officially retired.

Unfortunately, it'll be a while before we found out what Sonic 3 is about and whether Jim Carrey will return as Paramount announced a pretty far-off release date for the movie earlier this month. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to release in cinemas on December 20, 2024, a little under two and a half years from now. That being said, surely a throwdown between Sonic and Shadow is worth the wait.
