This fan remake of Sonic 3D Blast in 2D makes us wish Sega had ended that era with what worked, rather than trying to make a shift as it did with this game.

Unlike Mario, some gamers would probably agree that Sonic games peaked when the blue hedgehog was still depicted in just two dimensions. The classics on the Genesis are still played and released as parts of Mega Collections on newer consoles to this day. The shift to an isometric camera angle for Sonic 3D Blast was the final Sonic release on the Genesis, thus bringing an end to a significant era.

Although a great game, 3D Blast hasn't stood the test of time in the same way as the four games that preceded. However, a fan remake of the title has highlighted how it could have been. If Sega had stuck to what had worked for the previous half a decade. The remake turns 3D Blast into a 16-bit 2D sidescroller and adds Tails and Knuckles to the mix. Sonic had to go it alone in the original.

Had we watched the trailer above not knowing the game was fanmade, we'd have assumed it was an offering from Sega. It's very well done, includes 15 acts across eight zones, and is free to download. What's more, unlike Nintendo, Sega doesn't tend to go after fans who use its IP to make names, meaning it might not be removed any time soon, if ever.
