Miles “Tails” Prower is just as iconic as his famous buddy Sonic. A fox sporting two tails that allow him to fly, Tails has been a staple of the Sonic series since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He's known for his inventive mind and loyalty to Sonic, and is an endearing character who’s easy for us to love.

Tails’ design is simple, easily recognizable across his appearances, and hasn’t changed much over the years. However, in a few games, Tails sports accessories or outfits that change up his look. Beyond the games, Tails has also appeared in other media, including TV shows and movies.

Sonic 2 Tails

Tails’ debut appearance brings back a lot of nostalgia for the days of early Sonic games. Tails’ design hasn’t changed much since his first game, with his fur pattern, tuft of hair on his forehead, red and white shoes, and iconic two tails all present in his first look.

Despite the limitations of early pixel art, though, his sprite in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is quite detailed. However, notably, Tails does not have blue eyes in his first game, and his face shape is a little curvier than in later designs.

Tails 2D Default Design

Tails’s current standard 2D design adds a few more details from his first appearance. He still keeps the simplicity of his debut look, but his appearance is more refined.

In this design, Tails gets additional fur details, especially on the tips of his two tails, and a new line in his ear to add texture. His face shape also has straighter edges, making it easier to replicate consistently. Tails also gains his blue eyes, which stay consistent across his appearances.

Tails’ minimal, classic design is effortlessly transformed into the 3D space from his 2D appearance. Though earlier games, like Sonic Heroes, give his 3D appearance a boxier shape, as the games progress, his look becomes more detailed and crisp.

Tails rarely changes outfits or accessories, but there are a few games with notable exceptions. His 3D game design also translates into his various TV and movie appearances.

6 Sonic Riders

The spin-off Sonic Riders is one of the few games that gives Tails a small upgrade to his look: a set of goggles and a modified pair of shoes. Not only does Tails get to fly on a board instead of using his tail propeller, but he gets to look stylish while doing it!

Giving Tails a pair of goggles is the perfect addition to his character. As a mechanic, it’s only natural that he would need some protective eyewear while on the job.

The Sonic Runners mobile game included some alternate looks for a few of the big characters to celebrate different holidays and events. Tails is certainly ready for the Christmas season, as his alternate outfit was incredibly festive: an elf costume.

This merry red and green outfit not only matches Tails’ shoes, but it's a good choice for Sonic’s friend. Tails is one of the most well-known video game sidekicks, so it makes sense that he’d dress up as one of Santa’s helpers for the holiday season.

Surprisingly, Tails didn’t really have a sporty look until Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 spin-off. In that Olympic games, Tails has a number of different outfits he’ll wear depending on the sport. From surfing to martial arts to track and field, Tails switches it up with a unique look.

A lot of his alternate outfits are in a darker shade of orange that goes nicely with his usual fur color. His wetsuit look for surfing is especially cool, as it’s one of his only long sleeve shirts and has multiple colors.

Cookie Run Kingdom Tails

For a limited period of time, Tails appeared in Cookie Run Kingdom! As a part of the limited Sonic the Hedgehog crossover, Tails appeared alongside his pal Sonic. His cameo in this mobile game brought out Tails’ adorable side, making him appear even cuter than normal.

With softer lines and a muted color palette, Tails fit nicely into the world of Cookie Run Kingdom. His altered proportions add to the cuteness factor, too.

2 Sonic Boom

The TV show Sonic Boom also gives Tails a slight update to his look without losing the integrity of his classic design. He wears a belt and a set of goggles, and his shoes are wrapped with extra white fabric to match the design of the other characters who appear.

1 Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Movie Tails

Tails’ design for the big screen couldn’t be more perfect! His CGI design in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie is an excellent adaptation of his original classic look, right down to the way his propeller tails move.

While the iconic elements are all there, Tails’ look adds more details that make him appear more lively and real: the fur looks soft and fluffy, his socks have extra details, and his shoes have a slightly worn quality.
