Sonic Frontiers is now less than a month away from launch, and despite early reactions to its first details and trailers, hype for the game has grown quite a bit. That hype might well get another boost this week as a trailer detailing how exactly combat will work in Frontiers appears to have leaked slightly ahead of time.
The new trailer, which includes more than three minutes of mostly new information, has been shared on YouTube. Most notable is the in-depth look at the skill tree, the first time ever Sonic will have one. To unlock new skills, Sonic will need to collect skill pieces throughout his Frontiers journey. They'll be dropped by fallen enemies and can also be collected by breaking items. It's made clear that as you progress through the game, the skills you start with won't be enough to defeat certain enemies later on.
Players will also be tasked with collecting red seeds of power and blue seeds of defense to boost Sonic's stats. Again, it sounds like if you don't do this, progressing through the game and defeating increasingly tougher enemies will be challenging, if not impossible. It has already been revealed that some bosses can't be damaged unless you're Super Sonic, and it appears the same applies to your garden variety baddies if you aren't leveling up and expanding Sonic's skill tree.
As for what exactly those moves and abilities will be, while some will be familiar, like the hedgehog's homing attack, others detailed in the leaked trailer are brand new to the Sonic series. Sonic Boom will allow you to deal massive damage to opponents, but from a distance, while Wild Rush will see Sonic get up close and personal while zig-zagging through the air to avoid any incoming attacks. The Cyloop ability has also been shown in more detail, revealing that it can also be used to quickly gather up dropped rings.
Frontiers' latest trailer continues to demonstrate this might well be the start of a new era in Sonic games fans of the blue blur have been waiting years for. It was also revealed this week that the new Sonic game will include Monster Hunter DLC, and that its soundtrack includes 150 songs, the biggest in the series' history.
