The Sonic movies have been a smash hit, beloved by fans both new and old. For the first time since we thought Sonic Forces looked kind of alright, there's hope in the fanbase once again, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 played no small part in that. However, it looks like the popular new additions made to the world of Sonic for the movies are going to stay on the big screen.

In a recent interview, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka shared that there are no plans to change the Sonic game-verse in response to the movies' success. This comes after fans expressed an interest in introducing Robotnik's sidekick, Agent Stone into the games, as he proves to be one of the most loved human characters of all time.

Speaking to VGC, Iizuka was asked if any elements of the movies would be brought into the games, such as new character designs.

"What I want to do is stay faithful to our game Sonic", responds Iizuka. "[I want to] really expand on the game Sonic to incorporate new ideas that are going to get people excited about new games."

However, while the movies won't overwrite anything that's already been established in the games, it doesn't mean they won't get any representation.

"I think having Movie Sonic as a guest character is viable and certainly something that we’re going to do", Iizuka says. "But keeping the essence and core of Sonic in the games and then expanding out is probably what I’d prefer to do, rather than try to shoehorn in [the movie]."

Despite Sonic 2's success, it's easy to see why Iizuka is apprehensive about changing too much about game Sonic. The biggest departures from the usual lore, Sonic '06 and Sonic Boom, weren't particularly well received. And in any case, fans of the movies won't go without, as Sonic 3 and a Knuckles spin-off show have already been confirmed.
