Sonic the Hedgehog is about to conclude its opening weekend and has already set one all-time record for a video game movie. The film has seen favorable reception from fans. Not only is the Rotten Tomatoes audience score a 95%, but its CinemaScore is an "A."

It's been said 2020 is the year of the rat, but it might actually be the year of the hedgehog. Every 20th of the month, SEGA will be announcing news regarding everyone's favorite Blue Blur. In fact, this coming week will feature a new stream called "Sonic Station Live." SEGA clearly wants to keep Sonic at the forefront. There has been no word on new game announcements, but it's probably just a matter of time. After all, with Sonic the Hedgehog doing well in theaters, the company probably doesn't want to wait too long to capitalize on it. Although it's still early, the film could end up a big box office success.

Sonic the Hedgehog has the greatest domestic box office opening for a video game film (via Deadline), with its three-day total being $57 million. Sonic's $57 million beats out Detective Pikachu's $54.3 million opening. Deadline says projections for Sonic's box office gross through Monday/Presidents' Day is "around $68 million," with some thinking it could even go over $70 million. Its global debut is $100 million.

Sonic had a low Thursday opening, lower than Birds of Prey. However, as the numbers show, Sonic has been doing good business for Paramount. Its success can likely be owed in large part to the studio delaying the film to redesign the title character. Social media reactions went from heavily criticizing the original design, to highly praising the redesign and encouraging others to support the film.

Although Sonic the Hedgehog is not a perfect movie, it has resonated with fans, and the general audience seems to be enjoying it as well. As a family-friendly film, it certainly succeeds. With two final scenes teasing a sequel, fans are probably happy the film is doing well at the box office. It's probably only a matter of time before a sequel is announced. However, it's always possible Sonic could drop drastically after its opening weekend, so time will tell. But, more likely than not, Sonic should have a satisfying run.
