Sonic the Hedgehog has officially been greenlit for a sequel.

As reported by Variety, Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy confirmed today development has officially started on the follow-up to the original film released in February of this year, and will reportedly bring back the team that made the first movie such a critical success, including director, Jeff Fowler, with Pat Casey and Josh Miller presumably writing the script.

It really shouldn’t come as a shock that Sonic the Hedgehog would get a sequel. Long-time gamers, critics, and families made the first film a rousing success, not just for a video game film, but in general. At the time of this writing, Sonic the Hedgehog holds the #3 spot (behind Bad Boys For Life and 1917) on the domestic box office standings for 2020, hauling in over $146 million. Worldwide, however, Sonic holds the #2 overall spot reaching nearly $307 million (beat out again by Bad Boys For Life again, which has brought in $419 million). Additionally, Sonic secured the #1 opening weekend spot for a video game title and is widely considered one of the best video game adaptations to grace the silver screen.

Sonic the Hedgehog set itself up perfectly for a sequel as well, potentially setting the stage for a Marvel-style cinematic universe (yes, the Sonic extended universe is that big). No casting details have been released, but it would be a joy to see more beloved characters from the franchise brought to life in a movie while taking in Ben Schwartz’s voice as Sonic playing against Jim Carrey’s exceptional, scene-stealing portrayal of Dr. Robotnik.
