Sonic the Hedgehog is racing into homes soon, as the movie is getting an early digital release at the end of the month. The iconic video game character has enjoyed a successful theatrical run, becoming the highest-grossing video game film domestically.

At this point, what can be said about the Sonic movie? Everyone knows the story about perhaps the greatest flip-flop in film history. Once upon a time, social media was abuzz with near-universal negativity directed toward Sonic's movie design; even those involved with the games didn't seem thrilled. Paramount could have gone forward, but in an act of goodwill (or corporate greed), Sonic was delayed three months to redesign the titular character. When the new design was revealed, the internet let out a collective sigh of relief. Sonic has since seen solid reception and success at the box office. And soon, those who missed out on seeing it in cinemas can watch it at home.

Paramount has announced Sonic will be available for digital purchase on March 31, while the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD home media releases will arrive on May 19.

Fans shouldn't be surprised about Sonic's early digital release. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many movie theaters have closed. Studios have responded with delaying upcoming releases and putting out early digital releases of current movies. For example, Disney's Onward is on now available digitally after only being in theaters for two weeks and Trolls: World Tour will be available digitally the same day as its theatrical release.

Early digital releases have led to much online discussion about the future of movie theaters. Many are concerned, believing streaming will soon replace the movie-going experience. Others welcome the idea of movies being available to watch from home. For now though, many would probably agree that studios should be releasing movies on digital platforms early.

Sonic the Hedgehog will join the digital landscape on March 31, 2020.
