Sony Already Winding Down PS Vita Production In Japan

Sony Interactive Entertainment is winding down production of the PlayStation Vita in Japan.

The handheld's remaining devices, the PCH-2000 ZA11 Black and PCH-2000 ZA23 Aqua Blue, have been listed as "ending soon" on Sony's website, and we could see a cease in production within a few month's time.

According to Gematsu, Sony discontinued their production of the PlayStation 3 in 2017, just two months after making a similar announcement. So, things could be pretty much the same in this case.

Sony confirmed that they would end the game's production this year, back in September 2018, with executive Hiroyuki Oda revealing that a successor for the portable gaming system was not on the cards.

"Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device," he said. "In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end."

PS Vita launched in Japan in December of 2011 with big-budget games such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which was designed in an attempt to give gamers console-quality sessions away from a television. It rolled out elsewhere a year later.

A smaller, lighter version was released in Japan in 2013, going out to the rest of the world in 2014.

Nintendo's 3DS, though, attributed to the device's commercial failure, despite Sony's product being more advanced technologically and receiving the plaudits for its hardware and games. The platform shifted from popular titles to more indie games as a result, and the company has since decided to give up on production.

A specific date for the halt in manufacturing is still unknown, but it is expected that the device will say its farewell pretty soon, in Japan at least.

Sony has not said what this means for the handheld production in the West, but it would be fair to assume that production will discontinue there too, as they stopped making physical games for the device last May.

Indie developers owe a lot of their success to the PS Vita. Its emergence saw several of the smaller titles became popular. But, it appears that the run, as it pertains to the device itself, will soon be over everywhere.
