Sony has announced that the next Playstation is three years away, so players should be prepared to have a new console in 2021!
As reported by the Wall Street Journal on May 23rd, John Kodera, the CEO of Playstation, made a statement regarding the future of Sony and gaming after a presentation to investors.
While the console isn't close to being complete, Kodera said, "We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future."
This statement was made after Kodera explained that the Playstation 4 was nearing the end of its lifecycle. This news is interesting, as it means that the Playstation 4 will be the longest time period that Playstation has gone without a new console release. If 2021 ends up being the launch period, the PS4 will have had an eight year life cycle, close to a lifetime in the technology world.
However, it seems as though Sony has a reasoning for the extended life cycle of the Playstation 4, which Kodera explained when he said, "We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle. We’re no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they’re two different things. We need a broader perspective than that because so many things are now connected via the internet."
Regardless of Sony's plans for future consoles, and what they may be planning on changing or creating for the next Sony console, given the freedom of timelines means that this has been planned for a while and that players will be hearing a lot more of the next few years about what is in store for Sony.
