Sony unveiled a new reduced pricing structure for its PlayStation Now service, which is its own brand of cloud streaming service first launched in 2015. Sony has attempted to entice users into using its service in the past by lowering the price and adding more titles to its library, with some success.

As the Google Stadia nears its formal launch date in November, both Sony and Microsoft are reaching out to consumers to let them know that other options exist, and today’s announcement is looking quite attractive. Sony’s PlayStation Now pricing is being cut by up to half of its monthly rate, depending on the region, and is adding some impressive AAA titles in addition to its large catalogue.

Sony boasts to have the largest game library of any console game subscription service with over 800 games currently available. The games being added today are God of War, Grand Theft Auto V, inFAMOUS Second Son, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

While Sony's claim of having the largest offering is true, this will change once Microsoft formally launches its Project xCloud, which looks to offer the entire catalogue of over 3,500 games spread across three generations of Xbox consoles.

Players will have the option to either use Sony’s cloud gaming technology on either their PS4 or PC devices, or to download over from over 300 PS4 games onto their console system. This is a great option for players, since streaming may not be viable for all users based on the quality of their internet connections, and downloading a game is an excellent way to promote the service.

As mentioned, the timing of Sony’s announcement is a mere month before the Google Stadia formally arrives to reach consumers and is clearly meant to shift interest from one platform onto another. Microsoft also recently announced a public testing period for its cloud streaming service in late September. Right now, users who have the appropriate Android software are testing out Project xCloud and we will soon have a picture of how the service performs.

Cloud gaming is undoubtedly the way of the future as the infrastructure of internet connections continues to improve, and competition will be fierce for the attention of consumers. In only a month it will be clear how well the Google Stadia is received.

With the cloud gaming competition heating up, now is a great time to try all the services as they become available to find what works best for you.
