Although the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 released in 2009, Russia still hasn't forgotten about the controversial "No Russian" mission in that game, and as such, has made the decision to not release the remastered version of the game in the country.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered came out on March 31 for the PS4 (with a PC and Xbox release to follow in April), and brought the infamous mission back into the spotlight. Fans who played the original version or watched a video online might very well remember the mission where a Russian terrorist cell commits a mass shooting at an international airport, only to pin the blame on the US and spark a war between the two countries.
At the time, Russia wasn't too happy with how it was painted in that mission and as a result of that, removed the game from PC sales. After some time however, it re-released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but completely removed the mission from the game in order to control the controversy it managed to create. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered still keeping the "No Russian" mission, Sony Russia decided to not release the game at all.
One interesting thing to note however is that the game will still be released for PC and Xbox consoles in Russia. However, it's not fully known if the PC and Xbox versions will keep the "No Russian" mission in them, or if the mission will be removed. Additionally, it's not clear if the PS version of the game will continue to not be sold in the country, or if it will release at one point in the future with the "No Russian" mission taken out.
This isn't the first time a controversy surrounded Russia and Call of Duty. When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare released, it was review-bombed on MetaCritic for being Russophobic. At that time, some of the fans were not too happy with the game portraying Russia as a villain (yet again), and pinning the blame of a war crime that the US was fully responsible for onto Russia as well.
