According to a new report from Digitimes, Sony has shipped 3.4 million PS5 units in its first four weeks of availability, making it the most successful PlayStation console ever. It is estimated that the company will ship between 16.8 and 18 million units in 2021 since production has been recently accelerated.
AMD, which is responsible for manufacturing the PS5’s customized 7nm CPU, has reportedly secured additional production capacity from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, enabling production partners to meet demand for the console.
All in all, Sony hopes to deliver 10 million PS5 units before next March, an increase of the five to six million units the company had originally planned on shipping by then. Launched worldwide last month, the PS5 features exclusive games like Bluepoint's Demon's Souls, a remake of the action RPG developed by FromSoftware for the PS3 and published in 2009, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, an action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS4 and PS5 in 2020.
Despite the success of the launch, the PS5 is still sold out in most territories with retailers are unable to keep up with the demand. In North America, the PlayStation Direct store receives new stock regularly, but sells out immediately. In Japan, retailers have been raffling their extremely limited stock.
Although shipment priority was given to North American and European markets in November and December, Sony Interactive Entertainment is planning on increasing the supply of PS5 units in Asian markets after the new year. Early reports indicate that only 200,000 consoles have arrived in Japan since its launch on November 12.
According to industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto, the PS5 is Sony’s fastest-selling console to date, but its actual sales figures are still uncertified, therefore, Dr. Serkan advises consumers to take the news with a “grain of salt.”
The PS5 launched on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, and on November 19 in the rest of the world, including Europe, Middle East, South America, Asia, and South Africa.
