Kobold Press, a creator of super fine tabletop roleplaying game content, is bringing you yet another TTRPG sourcebook to add to your library. The company recently launched its Kickstarter adventure for Southlands, A Realm of High Adventure for the fifth edition of the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game. No surprise, Southlands went north of its $50,000 goal in about three hours, and still has 29 days remaining as of this writing.
Southlands is looking to be one of KP’s largest Kickstarter projects ever. According to the notes, the “project will create more than a dozen main rewards covering 4 major formats with two partner companies”. The core products will of course be the Southlands Worldbook, a hardcover book in both regular and limited edition, spanning 11 chapters and two appendices. Supporting books include the Southland Player’s Guide (softcover, four chapters), the hardcover City of Cats adventures book, PDFs of each, as well as VTT versions of all for both Fantasy Grounds and Roll20.
Southlands will feature tabletop roleplaying adventures in a Middle-eastern-themed realm, with heavy influence from ancient Egypt and North Africa, but immersed in high fantasy. The intro video explains the setting well, and also doesn’t reveal any spoilers. According to the FAQ section, KP “involved creators who trace their descent to those regions as well as employed cultural consultants to review the text and art”, and even had a “cultural consultant who specializes in Middle Eastern representation in tabletop RPGs and lives in that region” provide feedback and guidance to the dev team.
The Southlands Kickstarter project has a total of 15 reward tiers to choose from, ranging from $10 to $599. There are also 16 Stretch Goals in place, with only three remaining goals to hit, which it seems it surely will. The project also includes a Kickstarter Exclusive, the Tales Beneath the Sands adventure collection. According to the notes, this “is a Kickstarter print exclusive that is available only as an add-on here (PDF and VTT will be available more generally—the print exclusive version is a collector's item).” The hardcover book will contain a three-part “tomb-centric” Southlands adventure series, perfectly compatible with the City of Cats adventures book.
A “handbound leather edition for collectors and bibliophiles” is available at the $599 tier, and is another Kickstarter exclusive product. Printing of this Southlands sourcebook version will be “limited to roughly a dozen copies”, but it seems as if it’ll be a beautiful edition to own. If this is the copy you want, hurry and pledge for it, as there are only eight slots left in its reward tier as of this writing.
