It seems that Hollywood is willing to give any famous franchise a movie, as New Line Cinema is making a feature length Space Invaders film.

According to Deadlinethe movie is being penned by Greg Russo, who is also working on the upcoming R-rated Mortal Kombat movie as well as the reboot of the Resident Evil movie franchise. Space Invaders will be produced by Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell.

There is currently no information available about the premise of Space Invaders, as the movie is still in the earliest stages of development. The concept of aliens invading Earth has been rather overdone in Hollywood with little variation; it's possible that the film might just be a generic Independence Day clone with the name of a famous video game slapped on.

The producers could also go the less overdone Captain N route and have the aliens from the video games come to life and attack the Earth, a premise that was demonstrated in an excellent Futurama episode ("Anthology of Interest II") and in a terrible Adam Sandler movie (Pixels).

There has been a recent push by Hollywood studios to snap up as many video game properties as possible in order to adapt them into movies in spite of the prevalent belief that video game movies were cursed to fail. This preconception mostly came from the early '90s, when the film industry tried to capitalize on the games industry's recovery from the Video Game Crash Of 1983: many video game movies were pushed through production without consideration as to what the target audience wanted or what this kind of transmedia adaptation would need and, as a result, were financial failures. This belief has slowly been waning over time, as film studios have made an effort to understand the context of the games that they were adapting in order to create successful movies like Warcraft and the Resident Evil series.

With the rising success of these adaptations, Hollywood executives have been taking a second look at video game licenses. Upcoming video game movie adaptations include those based on Monster Hunter, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros., The Division, and even a Tetris movie that is planned to be part of a trilogy. It's clear that Hollywood wants to make movies out of the biggest video game properties and Space Invaders is certainly a famous name; but without a clear game plan to set it apart from any other alien invasion movie, the film may simply be repeating the mistakes of previous video game movie failures.

Space Invaders is currently in development.
