2006 was the year Stephenie Meyer released her young adult romance novel Twilight. Two years later, a film adaptation was released and it became a giant cultural phenomenon, bringing in fans who are called “Twihards.” Even though the hype for the Twilight Saga has calmed down in the past six years after Breaking Dawn Part 2, some people are quick to judge the flaws the books and movies have. In their defense, they had strong points, since there is a lot wrong with this series.

Even though it is a fantasy romance, none of the characters are realistic, even our “lovely” protagonist Bella Swan. She is pretty much the definition of a normal girl who gets her life thrown into a fantasy world while getting a handsome guy falling in love with her, and he happens to be a vampire named Edward Cullen. Also, she gets another guy going for her, who is her childhood friend turned werewolf Jacob Black. As the series went on, we suffer through the agonizing pain of what the special snowflake Bella does every time she complains or gets herself into danger, having to wait for Edward or Jacob to rescue her.

Stephenie Meyer is just one author, but the lore she has created and the characters that were conceived in the book and movie series have a lot of problems that are severely obvious as well as subtle. Let’s take a look at the stuff in the Twilight series that makes absolutely no sense.

25 Can Resist Because He Can

One of the more “likable” characters in Twilight is the leader of the Cullen clan, Carlisle. While hiding his true self as a vampire, he is a doctor at Forks Hospital. He has a calm approach and is able to resist human blood. For a vampire like him, that sounds perfect, since he has control in order to not hurt humans. How does this work, exactly?

Sure, he has been alive for about three centuries, but like any other vampire, they need to have urges for human blood. That is how a vampire is made to be, and it sounds like Carlisle is the antithesis of a vampire. Is it good for him to be able to resist human blood? Obviously yes, but it is asinine to think that he is too good to pass up the temptation of human blood.

24 Couldn't They Just... Not Go To School?

via: pinterest.com

Due to the Cullens being prevented from aging, they are forever the way they look physically. For the ages, Rosalie was eighteen, Jasper was nineteen, Emmett was twenty, Alice was nineteen, and Edward was seventeen. Due to their looks, they look like they can fit in high school, but when Bella visits the Cullen house, Edward shows her a lot of graduation caps. That seems like a waste of time.

Sure, they look like they would be the age range to go to high school, but it seems tedious for the Cullens to go to high school over and over again for nearly a century. Heck, they could just get college degrees and get it over with just like that! But no, the poor Cullens have to endure annoying high school drama and all that fun stuff.

23 Beautiful, Yet No Substance

via: twilightsaga.wikia.com

Speaking of the Cullens, let’s talk about Rosalie. At first, she seems very cold towards Bella, and when we found out why, it is plausible. Rosalie had a wonderful life before she turned into a vampire, but then her fiancé had a lot to drink and tried to have his way with her along with his buddies, leading her to get attacked.

Carlisle saved her life by changing her into a vampire.

Vampires have powers unique to them, but for Rosalie, her power is pretty useless. Looking at her, she is extremely beautiful. Any woman would desire for her flawless skin and beauty. She might have the strength and durability of a vampire, but having the power of beauty is something a narcissist would love to have.

22 That's A Weird Way To Turn Him

via: pinterest.com

We’re not done with Rosalie yet. As some of you may know, the Cullens are paired up determined by Carlisle. Did you know that after he turned Rosalie into a vampire, she was originally supposed to be a mate for Edward? However, it didn’t work out since they weren’t compatible with each other. Enter Emmett, who was attacked by a bear in 1935 and almost didn’t make it, but thanks to Rosalie, she was able to convince Carlisle to turn him into a vampire. The reason for that is kind of creepy.

Emmett, who is Rosalie’s husband, reminded her of her best friend Vera’s son. He had dimples, dark hair, and an innocent look that brought her back to the time her best friend gave birth to her son. Saving his life is one thing, but for that being the sole reason to transform him is unbelievably crazy.

21 They're Still Not Really Vegetarians

via: pinterest.com

As we all know, vampires need to drink blood in order to survive, despite their immortality. The Cullens are no exception, but instead of humans, they resort to animals like deer, mountain lions, and so much more. That does leave us some questions that annoy us, such as how does that make the Cullens vegetarians if they are drinking blood from animals?

It logically does not make sense at all. The term for vegetarian might be the fact that the Cullens are refraining from humans, but it still does not sound right for them to be called vegetarians. It is rather unfortunate that vampires can only drink blood, but for the Cullens to actually be a vegetarian, why couldn’t Carlisle come up with some artificial blood since he is an actual doctor?

20 Somehow Okay With It

via: wordpress.com

Charlie Swan, also known as the police officer in Forks and father to the special snowflake Bella. In some ways, he is probably one of the more bearable characters since he is actually sane, but he has some major flaws, especially as a father. While he has been estranged from his daughter due to divorcing his wife, the least he could do is try to make sure Bella does not get herself into ridiculous danger.

When it comes to a scene in Eclipse where Edward and Jacob were snarling at each other after the latter kissed Bella, Charlie comes in to save the day. When Jacob explained what happened, not once did he scold Jacob for making a move on Bella without her consent. All he did was stared in wonder like he wanted him to kiss his daughter.

19 Holding Nothing But Air

via: dorkly.com

As if the Twilight movies couldn’t get any more terrible, Breaking Dawn Part 1 is probably the worst ever in the series. Not only do we get the craziest scene where Bella and Edward make a mess (if you know what we mean here), but also encounter one of the worse uses of CGI ever. Once Bella goes into labor with her demonic baby nearly taking her life, she finally got it out to show off Renesmee. Does that sound ridiculously lazy or what?

The CGI looks absolutely awful, and it must have been weird for Nikki Reed, the actress who plays Rosalie, to hold nothing as if she is holding the baby. Whoever made the choice of making the baby CGI should never work in the movie industry ever again.

18 They Just Go Along With It

via: fanpop.com

To make Bella even more of a bigger Mary-Sue is that many characters that were barely in the series would risk their own lives to protect her. Ever since Bella was stupid enough to put herself in danger starting with James, the Cullens felt that she needs to be safe, but it made sense since she is Edward’s girlfriend.

In Eclipse, the wolf pack that accompanied Jacob decided to join in to protect her.

She barely had any interaction with them other than in New Moon, but the idea of protecting someone they barely had chemistry with just doesn’t sound right. The only one to be blamed is Bella since she was the one responsible for having Victoria coming after her since her beloved companion James passed away in the first book and movie.

17 Could Have Been Easier This Way

via: pinterest.com

No one likes to hear the news of someone passing away, and for Edward, he took it hard when he just so happened to misinterpret Jacob when he told him Charlie was arranging a funeral. Little did Edward know that it was not for Bella, but for Harry Clearwater who suffered from a cardiac arrest when Victoria arrived. Couldn’t Edward just check Bella’s social media first?

It would have saved the amount of time wasted in going to Italy to expose himself in front of the humans since the Volturi lives there. But the book and movie needed more drama and action, so there’s that excuse. Still, Edward could have done something less stupid just by checking Bella’s Facebook or Twitter, but then again, Bella is as interesting as wet cardboard.

16 How Much Time Have You Wasted?

via: twilight.wikia.com

Regarding Edward going to Italy to sack off his life by exposing himself to the humans, the real vampire to blame is Alice. She can see the future and be able to alter it by warning those who are involved in the vision. She had a vision of Bella jumping off a cliff, but she survived thanks to Jacob.

Due to that, Alice went to Forks to see if she was still alive, and she was right.

When she told Bella that Edward was going to reveal himself to the humans, why did she go to Bella to tell her instead of telling Carlisle? That way, he would know what to do and convince him that Bella is still alive. As mentioned before, New Moon really wanted to add more drama to appeal to the fangirls.

15 What An Irresponsible Guy

via: playbuzz.com

If we were to pick out which is the worst from The Twilight Saga, then it would have to be New Moon without a doubt. Not only do we see Bella at her worst, trying to put herself in danger just so she can see Edward, but there were so many dumb decisions made by other characters too. Once again, we have Charlie being mentioned on this list. What did he do this time?

Well, he was a terrible father in this book and movie. He is a police officer, and he didn’t know about Bella going to Italy until after she came back? That is completely inexcusable and irresponsible as a parent. Bella might have been eighteen, but how could he just do what he usually does without prioritizing his own daughter first? Perhaps we know where Bella got her stupidity from.

14 Just... Everything About Them

via: twilightsaga.wikia.com

One of the most controversial moments in the Twilight series is easily the relationship between Jacob and Renesmee. The only reason why they are even together is that Stephenie Meyer wanted to get rid of the love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob. As for the creepy imprinting scene, that will be explained later.

The fact that Jacob turned from a semi-likable werewolf to a gross person that falls for Bella’s daughter just completely ruined any likelihood of redeemable chances Jacob had. There is practically no chemistry between the two and they are only together for the sake of being together. That is not “true love,” that is just uncomfortable. It doesn’t help that Renesmee can grow into a woman in a few years so that she can be romantically involved with Jacob.

13 If Only They Just Told Her

via: pinterest.com

The ending to Breaking Dawn Part 2 might seem like an epic climax (until it gets ruined thanks to someone) but it could have been prevented if only the Cullens stopped a certain someone from going to the Volturi. When Renesmee was seen from afar, Irina, who is considered a cousin along with her sisters to the Cullens, was shocked.

She believed that Renesmee was an immortal child.

Since immortal children were an illegal action, she went to the Volturi to report it. You know what could have saved the unnecessary bloodshed? How about the Cullens just go up to her and tell her that it was Bella and Edward’s human-vampire daughter? That way, her life wouldn’t have been wasted. As we all know, we totally needed more conflict in the movie.

12 Fire It Up!

via: YouTube.com

Thankfully, the vampires in Twilight are not invincible, otherwise, they would be more insufferable than they already are. However, there are some weaknesses they should have had that vampires are associated with. What are those weaknesses? How about sunlight? But no, they just blind people whenever they are exposed to it. Garlic, holy water, and crosses? They are too good for those. How about fire instead?

Amazingly, that is their only weakness. All you have to do is deconstruct their limbs and make sure they burn before their body parts can reassemble. Now that we think about it, they kind of are indestructible. It goes to show that whoever is a vampire in Twilight, they are guaranteed to be perfection incarnate. That is just ridiculous and an insult to vampire logic.

11 Totally Not A Love Story

via: dailydot.com

Romeo and Juliet: tragic but classic. Elizabeth and Darcy: smart and sweet. Bella and Edward: manipulative and insulting. The idea around the last two becoming the couple real-life couples want to aim for is just sad. Both parties are at fault with Bella being manipulative and Edward is careless, which is completely ironic since his name essentially means “to protect.”

Bella is selfish and would rather her life wrapped around Edward than try to achieve other goals in life like going to college.

She would even take her own life if Edward did something incredibly stupid. Speaking of Edward, he is too protective of Bella that he would get angry if someone was to just talk to her, especially if it was her best friend Jacob. How can anyone see these two as a romantic couple?

10 Sudden Betrayal

via: twilightsaga.wikia.com

The trio that consisted of James, Victoria, and Laurent were the first real threats Bella had to come across since she got herself involved with vampires. It was just one simple afternoon with a thunderstorm coming and the Cullens are playing baseball. Alice then gets a vision of the three coming and since Bella was there, she had to mask her scent. Unsurprisingly, James is aware and is tempted to bite her.

Later on, Laurent warns the Cullens about how James is absolutely lethal. He has ditched James and Victoria and then after the former gets offed, he tries to get to Bella in New Moon? Why the sudden switcheroo? He was doing well with being Irina’s mate, and then he wants to drink Bella’s blood? Talk about a waste of time just so that Stephenie Meyer can write off his character.

9 How Can You Miss That?

via: twilightsaga.wikia.com

One of the vampires that seem to have great potential due to his backstory is Jasper. He was alive during the Civil War, fighting for the Confederacy, but was turned by a female vampire when he encountered her. As a vampire, Jasper has the ability to manipulate emotions, for better or worse. Want to know something completely contradictory?

Edward cannot read Bella’s mind, but Jasper can control her emotions?

How on earth can Jasper manipulate Bella’s emotions when she has a mind barrier? Emotions come from a human’s mind, which is where their thoughts are created. So, to think that Jasper is able to get into Bella’s mind emotionally just shows how inconsistent all of this is. Don’t give the excuse where Bella lets Edward read her mind when she became a vampire, because Jasper somehow is able to not get blocked by her mental shield.

8 One Cut Is All It Takes

via: twilightsaga,wikia.com

Referring back to Jasper, he is a wild card in the Cullen family, but that is not saying anything positive. His powers might be able to break through consistency for Bella, but it gets insane for Jasper, especially in New Moon. Thanks to him, he was the one who went ballistic when Bella got a paper cut trying to open a present.

He might have been the most recent vampire in the Cullen family, but to go berserk over a paper cut is just crazy. Couldn’t he have control over that when he was near Bella when she got bit by James in the previous book and movie? Once again, we are witnessing inconsistency revolving around Jasper, and it is a shame at how he is being the victim in the terrible writing of the books and movies.

7 Just A Typical Mary-Sue

via: pinterest.com

Let’s talk about the special snowflake Bella Swan. She was just a simple human girl who moved to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. She managed to snag some friends on her first day without even trying, and then when she laid eyes on Edward Cullen, her life changed forever.

The fact that she didn’t even try in being a compelling character just adds the cherry on top of her being a Mary-Sue.

For those who don’t know, a Mary-Sue is a fictionalized female character is excessively flawless. Bella is somehow beautiful, which is what her name means, and she relies on everyone to come save her whenever she is in danger. People just crave her attention like she is a goddess and it is just sickening at how bad of a character she is.

6 Pregnant, But How?

via: YouTube.com

Breaking Dawn as a whole is a cluttered and ridiculous mess. A long book and two-parter movie do not make it a worthy conclusion to a terrible series. To make things worse, we had to witness the awkward writing and acting whenever the honeymoon phase arrives. Then, we found out that Bella happens to be pregnant with Edward’s child. Just how can that be possible when Edward is not “alive?”

Since he has no trace of humanity left in him, how was he able to get Bella pregnant? The whole process just doesn’t add up well. Without getting too risqué, it shouldn’t be possible for Bella to be able to carry a child from someone who is technically not alive. No matter what reason, it is simply a cop-out Stephenie Meyer made.
