Spelunky 2 has already been released for PS4 with an incredibly positive reception, surprising few fans of the first game. The intense platforming dungeon crawler is coming to Steam on September 29th, but PC players will have to wait a bit longer for one of the game's features: Co-Op play will not be available at launch.

The reason for the delay pretty straightforward. While the game has been out on PS4 for a little over a week with few core gameplay issues, there have been troubles with the netcode, leading to fears of laggy gameplay or unresponsive controls if the same were to happen with the PC release. Considering the fact that PC and PS4 versions of Spelunky 2 will have crossplay, this is an issue that may take some time to hammer out, but it needs to be done. Spelunky 2 requires a lot of precision and intentional movement that just won't be fun to pull off with poor connection issues.

Of course, nobody wants to delay any part of the game, but there's no question that the Spelunky 2 team made the right call here. The game itself is completely finished; more than that, it's out on another platform. This leaves a lot of PC players already craving the action as they watch PS4 fans dig into the game's mechanics and compare them with the original's.

The decision to delay just one aspect of the game is certainly eased along by the fact that lead designer Derek Yu and the rest of the team are being honest about why the delay is happening and avoiding a concrete date that Co-Op will be enabled. The initial PS4 release had issues in this area, so this is a move that both responds to the community and ensures that fewer people have a first experience soured by lag. Transparency and a commitment to give fixing these issues as much time as required rather than rushing to meet a new deadline are both commendable traits in any dev team.

Given the speed with which they're addressing the connection issues for the PS4, though, it probably still won't be all that long before PC Spelunky 2 players are dungeon crawling with friends from both platforms.
