It was announced that Spider-Man would eventually be swinging onto the PlayStation versions of Marvel's Avengers before the game had even launched. More than 14 months later, the web-slinger is finally here. Well, almost. Spidey will finally become a playable character in Avengers on PS4 and PS5 on November 30, and we've now been given a first look at how he will play in game courtesy of IGN.

There's a lot to digest when it comes to Spider-Man in Marvel's Avengers, and not all of it is good news. There's a reason Peter Parker's arrival has been described as a hero event rather than an operation. That's because Spidey doesn't have his own story missions. To be expected really. The game's story can't be furthered with Spider-Man at the helm since it would mean players on other platforms would be left with a giant plothole.

Other than an opening cinematic introducing Spider-Man to the rest of the Avengers, any other information furthering his plight is done via voice memos and text messages. Not great, but there is good news. Spider-Man will be bringing 40 different suits to the game with him. That's quite the wardrobe that will presumably be rolled out over time like the rest of the Avengers. Not all of them can be unlocked without spending some real-life money, though.

The first look at Spider-Man's combat in-game actually looks pretty great. A lot of his moves are reminiscent of the sort of stuff he can do to enemies in Insomniac's critically-acclaimed games. Where the web-slinger's Avengers design appears to fall flat is when he's slinging webs. Avengers players will know most of the areas you traverse are pretty barren. Very different from the skyscraper-rich New York City Spider-Man is used to.

That has resulted in some necessary but somewhat annoying caveats when you're traveling around with Spider-Man. Most of the time the hero's webs will be attached to seemingly nothing. Even worse, Spider-Man bumps into the invisible ceiling to which his webs cling should you try to swing too high. The same goes for wall-crawling. There'll be no diving majestically from the tops of tall buildings as the game's design simply won't let you climb that high.
