America Chavez is set to make her superhero debut in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, but she nearly first appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home as now shown by cut concept art.

The art in question (thanks, IGN) shows America Chavez in costume with a glowing book, opposite MJ, Ned Leeds, Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, and Peter Parker. They're in an arcade of some sort in bumper cars but no scene like that can be found in the final cut of the film. It's likely that the whole segment was abandoned early on.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the general way that Marvel works, projects have been delayed, movies have been moved around, and plans have changed. Spider-Man: No Way Home could've been America Chavez's MCU debut as easily as it could have been her second appearance, but for whatever reason, Marvel Studios opted to drop her cameo altogether.

Originally, No Way Home was set to release before Multiverse of Madness, so it would've made sense to feature her given her new connection to Doctor Strange. But with delays, her appearance didn't pan out - now Multiverse of Madness is coming after with the first trailer even featuring as one of No Way Home's post-credit scenes.

It's rumoured that America Chavez would have been the character to bring in both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men rather than Ned Leeds as it happened in the final cut. This would've given her an important role but her inclusion could have made an already stacked film tip just over the line into messy territory, what with having already re-introduced Daredevil and two other Spider-Men.

If you don't know, America Chavez was Marvel's first Latin-American LGBTQ character to helm her own comic run, debuting in 2011. The MCU is older than her. Let that sink in. Xochitl Gomez is bringing her to life for the silver screen, telling the story of a character from a Utopian world, a reality that doesn't really exist.
