As all gamers know, licensed titles are generally something to be super wary about. You look at something like that South Park FPS from 1998 (that saw the player throwing pee-soaked snowballs at turkeys) or Superman 64, and you think, no thanks, developers. You can keep them.

This isn’t the case with all such games, naturally. South Park: The Stick of Truth and the Arkham games show just how strong licensed fare can be. Historically, Spider-Man has done quite well for himself when it comes to video games too (not that there haven’t also been some Spidey stinkers, as our rundown of his best and worst outings will show). Lots of eager players have been anticipating the PS4 release of Spider-Man ‘at some point in 2018,’ but now it looks as though a date has been confirmed.

Here we are, still in January, and we’re already deep in analysis about 2018 in the game industry. How will Nintendo Switch fare this year, can it continue its momentum beyond the first anniversary of its release? What will be the biggest games of this year? We’re already seeing heavy hitters like Monster Hunter World and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT starting to arrive, and there’s a great wealth of others waiting in the wings.

Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Release Date Possibly Revealed

Spider-Man PS4 (working title, of course) is a game that previously just wanted to throw its hat into the ring. Just for the sake of appearances, developers love to give ‘TBA 2018’ dates to their games, just to keep them on our radars and such. Spider-Man was one of these, but it looks like it’s been outed by a leak.

As Comic Book reports, leaks from retailers are super common in the industry, and it seems that CoolShop has dropped another. The site lists Spider-Man’s release date as September 28, and it’s tough to say whether this is just a placeholder or the real deal. It could well be legit, though, when you think about it. This date would be consistent with North America’s usual routine, which sees video games usually releasing on a Tuesday or Friday. It’s also an oddly specific date to be a placeholder.

This is to be taken with a grain of salt then, certainly, as there’s no official word. It’s looking like it could be legit, though, and that’s great. From what we know of Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game, it’s looking like a darn interesting title, unfettered by particular movie plots to tie in with. That playable Peter Parker ( and Mary Jane, in a limited role) is going to be a big deal.
