Spider-Man on the PS4 has finally released and, to the joy of many, is one of the greatest Marvel Comics video games ever made. Insomniac has taken their experience to craft a rich open world with all the popular faces and moments from Spider-Man lore. Topped off with plenty of references for fans of the movies, comics, and TV shows, there’s something for every Spider-fan in the game.

One of the most exciting features in the game is the multiple costumes. Throughout the adventure, players will unlock new suits for the wall crawler, some that were exclusively-designed by Insomniac and plenty others that came from movies or comics. Each of these suits not only comes with some sort of visual enhancement, but a special ability that Spider-Man can use while tackling his foes. Fans of the character are overjoyed to see this kind of love for him.

Hunting for the costumes is bound to keep most players busy for a while too, considering that there are 28 different outfits to collect in the game. Some of them are awarded for players completing story missions while others take a bit more effort to collect.

Not all the costumes were designed equally, though. The suits chosen for the game are all good in their own ways, but not all of them are great. That’s not to say that the suits chosen are bad, just that there are some that are clearly better than others.

Insomniac gave Spider-Man 28 different costumes in Spider-Man on PS4, and we’re ranking them from worst to best.

28 Empire State University

via comicbook.com

Insomniac released a day one patch for Spider-Man that gave him a costume that featured his civilian clothes. This costume throws Peter Parker into casual jeans and sneakers with an Empire State University t-shirt (a college in the game).

The look is topped off with the Spider-Man mask over his head.

While it’s nice to see Spidey in some civilian clothes, giving him his mask throws the look off. Furthermore, it doesn’t offer any bonuses in combat, leaving almost no reason to use the suit.

27 Wrestler Suit

via ign.com

When trying to discover the limits of his powers, Peter Parker decided to enter a wrestling match, where he donned a prototype version of his final suit. This costume made it into Insomniac’s game, and they took from the “Ultimate Spider-Man” version of the character. The suit isn’t all that pleasing, with the blue and red being unpleasing to the eye. The red and white eyes give the costume a bizarre look, making it one of the least impressive suits in the game.

26 Undies

via ultimatecomiccon.com

One of the last suits players unlock in the game is the Undies costume. This suit takes Peter Parker out of all his clothes, save for a pair of underoos with Spider-Man logos on them. Retaining his Spider-Man mask, he can still swing around New York. It’s a high-risk high-reward suit as well, allowing players to beat enemies in one hit, while also having only one hit point themselves. It’s a cute yet awkward reward for completing so many missions in the game, and it’s bound to be avoided by most.

25 Classic Suit (Damaged)

via tvandmovienews.com

When players start Spider-Man, they’re given the classic suit, which is a more familiar take on the Spider-Man costume. In the game, Spidey takes some damage which leaves his costume a bit torn. This becomes one of the suits players can select. The problem with it is that the damage isn’t noticeable, leaving the suit almost identical to the standard classic suit. It’s nothing like what we would’ve seen in the Sam Raimi films, which makes the costume underwhelming as a result.

24 Electrically-Insulated Suit

via ultimatecomiccon.com

The idea that Spider-Man would be smart enough to craft a unique suit specifically for fighting Electro is interesting.

The suit itself isn’t bad. In fact, it feels quite realistic, being bulkier and rubberier than what we would expect for the wall-crawler.

The visual heft of the suit isn’t all that attractive when compared to slimmer versions of the character, though. The logo is also given a different look, and blends in with the rest of his costume in an unattractive way.

23 Homemade Suit

via gamespot.com

Released at the height of Spider-Man’s appearance in the MCU, Insomniac was bound to include some costumes from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Among them was the homemade suit that Peter wore before meeting Tony Stark and during his fight with the Vulture. While it’s a nice change of design for the character, it’s not that impressive of a costume. Furthermore, in a game full of technologically-advanced Spider equipment, the suit feels like it doesn’t belong.

22 Dark Suit

via ultimatecomiccon.com

The Dark Suit is an obscure reference in the comics, with Spider-Man only wearing it once. That said, it’s not a bad look for him. Considering the game is lacking in some of Spidey’s darker costumes, the Dark Suit is a nice touch. It’s tight and slim, like a Spider-Man costume should be. The big downside is that the shade of red used for the suit doesn’t contrast well with the black. As a result, it’s difficult to distinguish his eyes and his emblem from the rest of the costume. It’s not the best dark costume in the game either.

21 Spirit Spider

via cbr.com

Based on a Peter Parker from an alternate reality, the Spirit Spider costume takes elements from both Spider-Man and the Ghost Rider. The result is one of the most visually unique costumes in the entire game, featuring a white Spider suit and a flaming blue skull for a head. It’s not a bad design, but it’s something that is out of left field for the tone of the game and the character in general. Perhaps in a darker game, it would be more appropriate.

20 Secret War

via tvandmovienews.com

The Secret War suit comes straight from an arc where Spider-Man had to invade Latveria with the help of other superheroes. This suit takes on a dark color scheme and is the closest the game has to a Miles Morales costume (though we suspect that’s coming down the line). The blue accents on the torso are a nice touch, adding enough contrast to make the suit visually pleasing. However, it’s the subtle red webbing along with the heavy use of black that cause it to feel inconsistent.

19 Fear Itself

via inverse.com

What happens when you combine Tony Stark’s technology with Asgardian magic? You get the Fear Itself suit. This costume pops on the screen, having a futuristic look that makes it a joy to use at nighttime.

Couple that with the Asgardian armbands, and it looks like something out of this world.

That said, the ancient look of the gauntlets clashes with the neon design of the rest of the costume. Other than that, it’s an eye-catching design that respects the source material.

18 Noir

via cbr.com

One of the most popular versions of Spider-Man is Spider-Man Noir. Having appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, it makes sense that Spidey would get his costume in this game as well. The design is ripped straight out of the comics, with thematic and period-exclusive equipment that hearkens back to an older time. The laced boots, leather jacket, and goggles all play off each other well to provide a look that is great to use in the game.

17 2099 Black Suit

via ultimatecomiccon.com

The Spider-Man 2099 costume is a classic, though there is a bit of confusion with its name. Despite having a clearly blue design, Marvel officially stated that it was supposed to be black. The printing was unable to properly portray the color. Still, it’s a neat look that homages a classic alternate take on Spider-Man. The glossy look does make it hard to distinguish when light is constantly reflecting off of it, but it’s still a nice suit. It also increases Spidey’s air combat game.

16 Negative Zone

via ultimatecomiccon.com

Spider-Man has traveled to the Negative Zone a few times, which led to him gaining a new costume. Considering that Mr. Negative was a villain featured in Spider-Man, it makes sense that he would get the Negative Zone suit in the game. This black and white costume makes a big impact, especially during nighttime. However, the logo gets a bit lost in the black design. That said, the white eyes and webbing are a pure treat to see. True to the source material, the suit lets Spidey use negative energy.

15 Spider-Punk

via ign.com

When Spider-Man had to fight the government by channeling the power of music, he had to look the part. Donning a pair of red chucks (complete with Spider-Man soles), a leather jacket with all sorts of wear and tear, a dark belt, and a spiked mohawk, he embraced punk rock.

This suit is surprisingly a good fit when talking to citizens of New York.

Furthermore, it lets Spidey use a guitar to blast enemies away with his scales and arpeggios.

14 Classic Suit

via twitter.com

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. When players first take control of Spider-Man, they’ll be treated to a costume that is entirely based on the classic version of the character. It says a lot about how good the design was that it remains one of the best superhero costumes in history. Brought to life with glorious graphics and an engine that makes it pop against the scenery, it’s a great suit. It also comes in handy by letting Spidey barrage foes with a series of webs.

13 Stealth (“Big Time”) Suit

via gamespot.com

One of Spider-Man’s greatest powers is his intelligence, which he used to create a stealth suit that he used in the “Big Time” storyline. The suit was a slim black with neon green accents. The costume is similar to the dark suit, but the massive green spider logo with lines extending down the arms and big, green eyes make it much more appealing than the black and red design. The suit warps light and sound in the comics and the game, allowing Spider-Man to sneak up on anyone with ease.

12 Velocity Suit

via gearnuke.com

One of the suits designed exclusively for the game, the Velocity suit is given further into the story. It’s a technically advanced version of Spider-Man’s classic design, having an indented, glow-in-the-dark spider logo over the chest. The muted blue and red make the logo stand out more, giving it a visual pop that makes it gorgeous to see in the game. The suit lets Spidey charge through enemies by running, making him just a few clicks shy of becoming Quicksilver.

11 Spider-Armor Mark II

via gamespot.com

Even Spider-Man needs a bit of help sometimes. He created this bulletproof suit to protect him in battle when his Spider-Sense called it quits for a time. The result was a sleek, black and gold suit of armor that was different than anything the wall-crawler wore before.

It’s a look that pops in the game as well, having the shiny black armor offset by the gold.

It provides nice contrast with lines all over the body. The narrow eyes add just the right touch without making Spidey look too different.

10 Vintage Suit

via reddit.com

While Insomniac was inspired by the comics for the classic suit, they practically put the pages in their game with the Vintage suit. Having a design that would be perfect on the cover of “Amazing Fantasy #15,” the suit was also given a cel-shaded look to properly convey the visual style of comics. It’s a beautiful homage to the history of the character. Unfortunately, the cel-shaded design contrasts poorly with the realistic look of the world. Still, there’s no denying how good the suit looks.

9 2099 White Suit

via ultimatecomiccon.com

Spider-Man 2099 didn’t keep his black suit forever. In 2015, he was given a re-design that cleaned up the look a lot. Having white as the primary color instead of blue, the suit makes much more of an impression. However, it keeps the sharp red lines of the original 2099 suit to keep the feel of Miguel O’Hara intact. The details in the game give it a much more futuristic look, something that feels much more at home than the glossy black of the previous version.
