The upcoming Spider-Man for PS4 is set to update the wall-crawler's look when it drops later this year, but it's also giving one of Spidey's classic villains a makeover. Shocker, a baddie that fires sonic blasts from devices on his wrists, is getting a souped-up costume that seems to offer a lot more protection. Fans might find this armored take on the villain to be... shocking.

Now that the obvious pun is out of the way, we can take a serious look at Shocker's design for the game. The Telegraph has a gallery of new images of Spider-Man PS4 including this armored Shocker. While there's not a full body shot available (at least not in the pictures made available, the full gallery is locked behind a sign-up screen for the Telegraph), Shocker's sturdy helmet and shoulder pads are in clear view.

This is an interesting change because it's quite the departure from Shocker as he is presented in the comics. Shocker, due to his vibration-based abilities, wears a suit with more padding than armor, presumably to ease the collateral damage his sonic blasts might inflict upon him. As to the reason behind the changes, Insomniac Art Director Jacinda Chew had this to say:

“In the comic books he wears a red unitard onesie with a deep v-neck which even if we’d tried to translate one-to-one in the game wouldn’t have worked. We tried to make it more functional, which is why we armoured him up. We kept the yellow and the red and that quilted fabric, but we wanted to modernise it.”

Of course, this implies that many other Spidey rogues will get "modernised" outfits for the PS4 game. There certainly seems to be a unique world evolving around the game, what with the prequel novelization that will release leading up to it. With the appearances of old villains like Shocker and newer ones like Mr. Negative, this Spidey world is shaping up to be an interesting blend of the greatest parts of Spidey lore. The gameplay, meanwhile, takes elements from the successful Batman Arkham games and the free exploration of the beloved Spider-Man 2. Hopefully, Spider-Fans will be getting something amazing, or even spectacular when the game releases on September 7th.
