The eternal war regarding the love of condiments is returning to an old battlefield, as Splatoon 2 is bringing back the Mayo vs. Ketchup Splatfest as a bonus event, even though the Splatfests were meant to have ended in 2019.

Splatfests were events that originated with the original Splatoon, where players would choose between two different sides and battle against teams of people who picked the other choice. The Splatfests included wars between cake and ice cream, vampires and werewolves, and squid and octopus. The Splatfests generally lasted twenty-four hours and players were restricted to battling players from the same region.

The final Splatfest for Splatoon 2 was Chaos vs Order, which ended with a victory for Order in 2019. It seems that the developers want one last Splatfest, as they're bringing back a war that occurred shortly after Splatoon 2 was released. According to the Nintendo Versus Twitter page, a new Mayo vs. Ketchup Splatfest is due to kick off on May 22 and will run until May 24.

Splatoon 2 already had a Mayo vs. Ketchup Splatfest back in 2017. It happened simultaneously across all regions and was the second Splatfest held for Splatoon 2. The winner back in 2017 was mayo, but the ketchup fans could rally for a victory in 2020.

Nintendo has been showing a lot of love for Splatoon 2 recently, with an upcoming free trial that will let people play the game online for a week, alongside a seven-day subscription to Nintendo Switch Online. It's unclear why Nintendo is promoting Splatoon 2 at this time and it could just be an example of the company needing to fill holes in the schedule, especially as 2020 is still looking pretty bare. It's possible that Nintendo is building up hype for a Splatoon 3 announcement and that more surprise Splatfests are on the way in the future, but in the meantime, the fans will need to busy themselves with another war over which condiment is the most delicious.

The bonus Splatfest starts on May 22 at 3 pm PT and ends on May 24 at 3 pm PT.
