Ketchup has finally earned its long-awaited victory in the Splatoon 2 universe, as it is the champion of the final Splatfest in Splatoon 2.

The Splatoon series has held regular events known as Splatfests, where players got to choose between two sides and battle members of the opposite team. Splatfests have included events like Cake vs. Ice Cream, Film vs. Book, and Squid vs. Octopus. The final Splatfest in Splatoon 2 was meant to be Chaos vs. Order, with Chaos taking the victory. Nintendo recently announced that another Splatfest would be held and that it would bring back one of the earliest battles in Splatoon 2 - Ketchup vs. Mayo.

The results are now in and Ketchup has finally been declared victor, marking the final Splatfest of the Splatoon 2 era. Mayo was declared the victor back in the 2017 Splatfest, while Ketchup is the victor in the 2020 Splatfest.

The reason why the Team Ketchup victory is significant is because there were concerns that the numbers were being fudged on the part of Nintendo during the previous Splatfest in 2017. If the combined results had been used in each category, then Ketchup would have won, but segregated figures were used instead, which meant that Mayo won. The victory for Ketchup has been coming for a long time and fans are glad to see the final Splatfest end by fixing a mistake of the past.

The fans are now left wondering what will come next? The revival of the Splatfest concept led many to believe that a Splatoon 3 announcement was incoming, but that doesn't seem to have happened just yet. It's possible that the COVID-19 situation has led to a delayed announcement (following rumors that a planned Nintendo Direct for June was canceled), so it's possible that we might not hear anything about the next Splatoon title for a while. Splatoon 2 was released early in the Switch's lifespan and there are those who felt that it didn't do enough to differentiate itself from the first game. Thus, there is a strong desire to see a Splatoon 3 that shakes up the formula more than its predecessor.
