The rumoured next Splinter Cell will reportedly feature elements inspired by the latest Hitman trilogy.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that a new Splinter Cell game is in early development at Ubisoft. No other details were given at the time, save for the fact that it might be announced sometime next year and has only recently been greenlit.

As reported by VGC, GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb has given us the first indication of what sort of direction Ubisoft is going to take Splinter Cell in, and it's reportedly inspired by the recent Hitman trilogy.

Grubb says that although GamesBeat cannot confirm the details originally reported by VGC, they do line up with what he's heard. He said, "Ubisoft regularly runs testing sessions with consumers to get feedback on potential products. In the weeks before E3, Ubisoft had fans play the upcoming Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake and something that had the appearance of a new Splinter Cell prototype.

"The testers did not spend a lot of time with the possible Splinter Cell game. Ubisoft provided a vertical slice that was just a basic tutorial section. But this version of the game combined familiar Splinter Cell action with elements of the 2016 Hitman reboot. This does not mean this is the same game that Ubisoft greenlit. The publisher is likely always testing and considering new possibilities for its upcoming games. And any eventual Splinter Cell release may look nothing like this secret prototype from early 2021."

It's not very clear what sort of elements from Hitman are being incorporated into the Splinter Cell reboot, much less what "familiar Splinter Cell action" is considering how different the most recent entries in the series were from the originals. Some are speculating that it means the massive open levels for players to explore and stealth around in. It's also stated that it might be from a completely different project, or end up being different from the prototype that was available, so we might never see it come to pass.
