SpongeBob SquarePants quickly went from a weird Nickelodeon cartoon show to one of the brand's most popular and successful intellectual properties. SpongeBob as a character has ingrained himself into pop culture for the long haul, and we're now seeing adults pass on the love of the show to their children.

Throughout the years it has seen its fair share of licensed video games, but which ones are the best of the best? Let's take a look at and rank the best SpongeBob SquarePants video games, from worst to best.

Updated April 27th, 2022 by Jerrad Wyche: SpongeBob SquarePants managed to not only be a successful long-running American cartoon, but it has cemented itself as a part of both popular and internet culture as a mainstay that'll be around for decades. Despite this success, it hasn't had a fair shake in the world of video games, as most of the licensed experiences fall flat of what fans want out of them. Thankfully, over the years, there have been a good number that range from good to great.

14 Lights, Camera, Pants!

An issue with video game critique is that it's almost always an adult reviewing the game, and sometimes those projects are designed for the brains of children.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Lights, Camera, Pants! is a perfect example of a game that is less than stellar from an adult's perspective, but as a children's title it works as a funny and entertaining party game. Its one flaw is that it doesn't work as a single-player experience, as the computer-controlled characters offer little challenge or pushback.

13 Super Bouncy Fun Time

When it comes to mobile games, there tends to be a handful of money grabs for every title that is genuinely a good gaming experience. In the realm of SpongeBob SquarePants, however, there happens to be a mobile title that's rather enjoyable.

The game in question is 2012's SpongeBob's Super Bouncy Fun Time, which was praised for having the addictive and fun gameplay loop people look for in their mobile games. It runs on the classic star system that lets you know how well you did in its 100 levels, and its one weakness is that it was clearly designed for younger children — it lacks any real challenge.

12 Creature From The Krusty Krab

SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature From The Krusty Krab released in 2006 for Nintendo GameCube, DS, GameBoy Advance, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PC. It was a pretty important title. as it happened to be the first SpongeBob SquarePants video game to release in Japan.

The game was mostly a platformer, but featured gameplay elements that had players racing, rail shooting, and adventuring as well. It almost unanimously reviewed best on the Nintendo GameCube, for those looking to go back and try it out.

11 Surf & Skate Roadtrip

The Xbox 360 was a very successful console for Microsoft, but late in the generation, they introduced the infamous Microsoft Kinect accessory that was built for motion-tracking gameplay. SpongeBob's Surf & Skate Roadtrip, developed by Blitz Games for the Xbox 360, released in 2011 to pretty mixed reviews.

The game seemed to be a great time for younger fans looking to get in a few hours of fun, but for anyone else, it was a mediocre game that was skipped or picked up in a bargain bin months from its release.

10 Squigglepants

SpongeBob Squigglepants was the fourth game to use the Wii's uDraw GameTablet accessory, and released in March of 2011. It is essentially a collection of SpongeBob SquarePants-themed mini-games, with the total coming out to around 100.

The game also gave fans a look at styles of the characters from various test sketches and other animation tests. Squigglepants also happens to be one of the few games to feature an appearance from Patchy the Pirate, seen in the show's intro theme song.

9 Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

For years, fans of Super Smash Bros. have wanted a similar fighting game that they could experience on non-Nintendo consoles. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl happens to be one of the closest things to fit that dream over the last decade.

The game suffers from some weird choices in both the audio and voice acting departments, but at a 71 on Metacritic, it's enough of a good time that you won't feel bad picking up for a discount in a sale.

8 Atlantis Squarepantis

SpongeBob SquarePants' Atlantis Squarepantis was a video game released in 2007 that went by the same name as one of the show's more popular episodes. Weirdly enough, the versions of the game released on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, and GameBoy Advance have a different plot intro than that of the Nintendo DS version.

What makes things even weirder is that the DS version is the one that reviewed the best, and was met with the most positive reception from the audience.

7 Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix

Kart racing games have been a staple sub-genre that has permeated the gaming landscape since the early days of Mario Kart. Nickelodeon also took at shot at the formula, and then followed that up with a sequel in 2020 called Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand Prix.

As far as playable characters from SpongeBob SquarePants go, it lets you drive as either SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, or Sandy. Other characters from the series are also featured as members of your pit crew.

6 The Yellow Avenger

Based on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger's title you'd assume this game came out in an attempt to ride the hype of modern superhero films, but this game released back in 2005 and 2006 for the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable, respectively.

The platformer was lauded for its graphics and music, but the sound effects and user interface left a lot to be desired. It seems that the DS version reviewed in the mid-70s, whereas the PSP counterpart slides to the 50s for most of its scores.

5 Drawn To Life

The Drawn To Life video game franchise was quite a hit on the Nintendo DS thanks in large part to the handheld's stylus. Due to its success, it seemed like a perfect fit for SpongeBob SquarePants to appear as a licensed and themed version of the game.

In the cartoon there was a very popular episode where SpongeBob draws a friend that comes to life, and in the game the plot starts in almost the same exact manner. At its core it was a 2D platformer that implemented mechanics that had the player drawing things on their touchscreen.

4 The Movie

In 2004, most kids were already hooked on SpongeBob SquarePants and the theatrical release of the movie based on the show had kids excited. This was matched with the release of the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie licensed game that had players playing through the plot of the film.

The game was published by THQ and released on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PC, and GameBoy Advance. It was also ported to the PlayStation 3 in 2012.

3 SuperSponge

SpongeBob SquarePants: SuperSponge was a 2001 platformer released on the PlayStation and Game Boy Advance. The game was fun, but made its mark from being bundled in a double pack with SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman as well as a separate triple back bundle with two other non-SpongeBob SquarePants games.

In SuperSponge, the game centers on SpongeBob trying to find his friend Patrick the ultimate birthday gift, which leads him into an unforgettable journey.

2 Revenge Of The Flying Dutchman

You may now know Vicarious Visions as the studio who remade the original Crash Bandicoot games, released as a package deal in 2018. Back in 2002, though, they had their hands full with the Game Boy Advance title SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.

This was a 2D platformer that was met with decent critical reception on the GBA, but the GameCube version had many more issues. The difference was likely audience expectation based on the platform they were playing on.

1 Battle For Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom originally released in 2003 to pretty solid reviews for a licensed game and quickly became regarded as the best title based on the children's cartoon.

The game was remastered for current generation consoles, released in 2020 for a price of $30. The game received slightly worse reviews due to modern gaming standards, but fans of the original are still having a blast, despite the only real upgrade coming in the asset department.
